USMNT beat Iran 1-0 to advance to the knockout round
There were plenty of harrowing moments late in Tuesday’s game for Team USA in the 2022 World Cup, as the team clung to a 1-0 lead in a must-win game against Iran. In the end, Christian Pulisic’s painful goal in the 38th minute held up and the Americans celebrated a hard-fought victory. With Pulisic rehabbing a pelvic bone bruise, and a stiffer test coming up against the Netherlands, we’ll see if the US team can make it past the Round of 16 for the first time since 2002. US Soccer announced that Pulisic has been cleared to play Saturday.

USA vs. Netherlands game notes
Team USA went 1-2-0 in group play with draws against Wales (1-1) and England (0-0) before scoring the 1-0 win over Iran. Scoring two goals over three games won’t cut it against the better teams that made it past group play, so they’re going to need to find offense from somewhere. Against Iran, Team USA dominated the possession in the first half and had the majority of their 12 shots and five that went on goal. Iran only had four shots and one on net, all in the second half, when the United States played a tight, try-not-to-draw style.
Team Netherlands comes in 2-1 with wins over Senegal (2-0) and Qatar (2-0) and a draw against Ecuador (1-1), who did not advance past the group stage. Cody Gakpo has scored more goals (3) than all of Team USA combined, so he’ll be the focal point for the defense in this game. Gakpo has also scored more goals than the rest of his teammates combined (2).
Goalkeeper Andries Noppert stands 6’8” and has stopped 10 of 11 shots on goal. The Americans have only allowed six shots on goal in the tournament thus far, as goalkeeper Matt Turner has five saves.
This will be the first meeting between the United States and Netherlands in World Cup history.
USA vs. Netherlands prediction
Under 1.5 (+180) (regular time) would be my pick here. The Dutch have only managed eight shots on goal in three games and the Americans have had limited scoring chances outside of their aggressive first half against Iran.
