We knew going into the offseason that several teams had questions at the quarterback position and were going to address them in one way or another. With one of the weakest QB classes we’ve seen in quite some time for the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft, teams have gone the trade route and some major transactions have taken place around the league.
The latest domino to fall is Carson Wentz, who was traded from the Indianapolis Colts to the Washington Commanders for a couple of third-round picks (one could become a second) and the entirety of the $28 million that Wentz is due this season. Incredibly, the Colts traded Wentz before the Philadelphia Eagles even made their pick with the first-rounder that Indianapolis sent over prior to last season.
The impact of Wentz to the Commanders in the betting markets has been interesting. DraftKings Sportsbook has one of the lowest prices in the market at 40/1 after dropping down from 50/1 per their tweet. Meanwhile, WynnBET Senior Trading Manager Alan Berg tweeted right after the breaking news that he was moving the Commanders from 60/1 to 75/1 to win Super Bowl LVII. Every book handles news differently to say the least.
That is a stark contrast to what we saw when the Wilson deal came down with Denver, with everybody in agreement. The Broncos’ Super Bowl LVII odds were cut down from 25/1 to 12/1 at some place. DraftKings was already sitting at 18/1 to protect against the Broncos making a big splash, but made the adjustment down to 12/1 when the trade came through. Our own Michael Lombardi put his stamp of approval on the trade and so did the sportsbooks.
Wilson’s MVP odds also fell with a lot of skill-position talent around him in the Mile High City. He is down to 12/1 at DraftKings, trailing only Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers and Justin Herbert. Wilson was previously 25/1 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
Circling back to the Colts, their futures price sits at 30/1, with Jimmy Garoppolo still the premier name on the market. Many believe Wentz to be a below average quarterback and the Colts may upgrade at the position through all of this, while still having an elite offensive line, a great running game and a quality defense. They also now have the most free salary cap space entering free agency. Their odds may go down if they add one of the available quarterbacks, so this may be one you want to jump on now.
