NBA playoff favorites continued their dominance on Tuesday, going a perfect 3-0 ATS. Favorites are now a remarkable 27-14 ATS (66%) this postseason. A $100 bettors taking every favorite on the spread this postseason would be up roughly $1,200 overall. Short favorites -5 or less went 2-0 ATS yesterday to improve to 18-5 ATS (78%).
Now it's on to Wednesday, where bettors have a plethora of sweats to choose from including 12 MLB games, 4 NBA playoff games and 2 NHL playoff games. For an updated breakdown of Wednesday's betting action, be sure to tune in to the VSiN Market Insights Podcast with Josh Appelbaum. It will be posted at 1 p.m. ET. I'll also be co-hosting Betting Across America with Mike Pritchard from 3 p.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET to go over all of today's action in greater depth.
In the meantime, let's discuss a pair of NBA playoff games receiving notable sharp action tonight...
7 p.m. ET: Washington Wizards at Philadelphia 76ers
This is Game 5 of the East first round. The 76ers lead the series 3-1 and can punch their ticket to the second round with a win tonight. The Wizards are coming off a big 122-114 victory in Game 4 to stave off elimination, winning outright as 8.5-point home dogs. This Game 5 line opened with Philadelphia listed as a 7-point home favorite. The elephant in the room for this game is 76ers star Joel Embiid. He is hurt and expected to miss this game with a knee injury. Still, the public isn't sure whether or not to lay the points. However, we've seen this line fall from 7 to 6.5. This signals some respected action, likely due to the Embiid injury, backing the desperate Wizards plus the points. The total opened at 230.5 and has dipped slightly to 229.5. The over is 3-1 this series. When the total is 220 or higher, the over is 17-8 (68%) this postseason. Up 3-1 in the series, the 76ers are -5000 favorites to advance to the next round. The Wizards are + 1400 longshots to come back and win the series.
7:30 p.m. ET: Atlanta Hawks at New York Knicks
This is Game 5 of the East first round. The Hawks lead the series 3-1 and can eliminate the Knicks with a victory tonight. After splitting the first two games, the Hawks have won two straight, winning and covering as short favorites both times. Now the series shifts back to Madison Square Garden. This Game 5 line opened with New York listed as a short 1.5-point home favorite. Some shops actually opened Knicks -1 and got bet up to -1.5. The Knicks have value as a short playoff favorite -5 or less (18-5 ATS, 78%). New York also has value as a buy-low home favorite off a blowout loss of 10-points or more (roughly 57% ATS the past decade). The total hasn't moved off the opener of 208. The under is 3-0-1 this series. Leading 3-1, the Hawks are -1100 favorites to advance to the next round. The Knicks are + 700 longshots to come back and win the series.
7:30 p.m. ET: Montreal Canadiens at Winnipeg Jets
This is Game 1 of the North second round. The Canadiens are coming off a thrilling 3-1 win in Game 7 to beat the Leafs. Montreal was down 3-1 in the series and came back to win and advance. On the flip side, the Jets swept the Oilers 4-0 in round one, winning outright as a dog in all four games. This Game 1 line opened with Winnipeg listed as a short -115 home favorite and Montreal a + 105 road dog. Respected money has pounded the Jets, steaming Winnipeg up from -115 to -135. Favorites with a line move in their favor are 22-12 (65%) this postseason. The Jets also enjoy a massive rest vs tired advantage in this one. Winnipeg last played on May 24 while the Canadiens just played on May 31st. The Jets have a full week rest advantage. We saw the Avs roll the Knights 7-1 earlier this week enjoying a similar rest vs tired advantage. We could also be looking at a low scoring game tonight, as the total is 5.5 with heavy under juice (-140). The Jets are short -135 favorites to win this series. The Canadiens are + 110 dogs.
