Tuley's Thoroughbred Takes for races on Saturday, Sept. 19

By Dave Tuley  ( senior reporter)

September 19, 2020 12:15 AM

With football back in the spotlight (and with the Kentucky Derby behind us), we decided to limit Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes to just Saturdays during September and October, leading up to the Breeders’ Cup.

This Saturday, our team is looking at the solid cards at Belmont and Woodbine. John Lauro and I have a difference of opinion in the Belmont Oaks while Duane Colucci and Lauro square off in the Woodbine Mile. I also have another pick on the Woodbine card and Ed Sehon doesn’t have a best bet but gives his take on several horses as he tackles the Late Pick 4 at Belmont.

Good luck today (and every day!).

Belmont Race No. 5 (3:04 p.m. ET/12:04 p.m. PT)

In the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes, John Lauro likes an exacta box with #2 Magic Attitude (1-1 morning line) and #5 Antoinette (9-5). Lauro adds about Antoinette: “Her last was huge for [Bill] Mott.”

Dave Tuley likes #3 Key Biscayne (8-1 morning line). While the favorites might rule this race, I’m taking a shot on a closer with Key Biscayne. He was running late in his last two stakes attempts and is worth a shot at a price to be run down the early pace-setters here in this short field. Wager: Win & Place.

Belmont Race No. 7 (4:08 p.m. ET/1:08 p.m. PT)

Ed Sehon likes a $0.50 Late Pick 4 (cost $40 after scratch)

Race 7

#3 Shone Town (10-1 morning line) ... respect connections stretching out on turf

#4 Momentita (10-1) ... SCRATCHED

#6 Amortization (7-2) ... must respect premiere trainer-jock combo

#7 Brynbella (8-1) ... Saez rides for Pletcher, must break

#9 Island Treasure (6-1) ... working steadily since June for Shug

#10 Kerry Girl (9-2) ... don’t overlook Tiz the Law connections

Race 8

#1 Flashpackinbarbie (7-5) ... look for perfect trip from inside post

#1a Blitchton Lady (7-5) ... daughter of Verrazano seeks repeat

#4 Shesasuperfreak (3-1) ... been knocking at the door, Saez rides

#6 Firenze Freedom (6-1) ... joins Breen barn, posts fast work

Race 9

#4 Opt (8-1) ... been training well for turf turnback

#7 Maxwell Esquire (3-1) ... improving sprinter stretches out

Race 10

#2 Freudian Analyst (7-2) ... consistent closer, adds distance

#4 Fast Gordon (9-2) ... Linda Rice trainee drops, gets rider upgrade

#6 On the Couch (8-1) ... son of Freud adds blinkers, Franco

Woodbine Race No. 9 (5:39 p.m. ET/2:39 p.m. PT)

Duane Colucci likes #3 Shirl’s Speight (8-1 morning line) in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile. “Two huge wins at Woodbine and super works as this 3-year-old steps up to face major competition. No sophomore has ever won this event, but trainer Roger Attfield has this monster ready after missing the Kentucky Derby. Bet 3 to Win and key 3 over 1, 7 & 8 in exactas and trifectas and reverse.”

John Laruo likes the “Casse Exacta Box” with the two Mark Cassee trainees, #8 War of Will (2-1 morning line) and #1 March to the Arch (5-2).

Woodbine Race No. 10 (6:14 p.m. ET/3:14 p.m. PT)

Dave Tuley likes #2 Dirty Dangle (10-1 morning line) in the ungraded Woodbine Cares Stakes. There’s a ton of speed as expected in this five-furlong sprint on the turf. This 2-year-old filly was able to rate in her debut and that type of trip could be the key to the upset as the speedsters duel themselves into the ground. Trainer Ralph Biamonte is also 27% with first-time turfers. Wager: Win & Place.
