Tuley's Thoroughbred Takes for races of Saturday, Oct. 16

By Dave Tuley  ( senior reporter)

October 16, 2021 07:03 AM

Football season is in full swing, but there’s still time each Saturday to sneak in some horse racing wagers, so Team Tuley continues to look for value at tracks from coast to coast.

We hope you were following us last Saturday as we were on fire as Ed Sehon (aka Mr. Ed from his “Mr. Ed’s Saratoga on (about) $100 a Day” Saratoga column over the summer) gave out Strava ($11.60 winner) in Keeneland’s 5th race, Duane Colucci was all over Belmont’s 7th race ($179.50 for a $2 exacta and $303.80 for a $1 trifecta) and I had In Love ($26.60 winner) in Keeneland’s 10th race, the Keeneland Turf Mile. In Love was 24-1 entering the gate, so hopefully that means a lot of our readers were betting him late.

This Saturday, Sehon, Colucci and I have picks at Belmont Park, Keeneland and Santa Anita, plus John Lauro adds a spot play on Sunday at Woodbine.

Good luck today (and every day!).

Belmont Race No. 3 (1:41 p.m. ET/10:44 a.m. PT)

Ed Sehon likes #2 Smile Bryan (9-2 morning line). “Lone-speed colt should benefit from inside draw vs. short field. Manny Franco takes reins for journeyman NY trainer Mike Micelli. Wager: Win and Place.”

Keeneland Race No. 3 (2:04 p.m. ET/11:04 a.m. PT)

Ed Sehon likes #8 Quari Master (12-1 morning line). “Sneaky-good trainer Paulo Lobo sends first-time-starter, international-Kentucky bred, 2-year-old colt in grass route. Solid work. Alex Achard climbs aboard the Master. Wager: Win and Place.”

Keeneland Race No. 5 (3:08 p.m. ET/12:08 p.m. PT)

Ed Sehon likes #6 Fighting Seabee (3-1 morning line). “Sharp conditioner Kenny McPeak teams with hot rider Brian Hernandez Jr. in dropping classy 4-year-old while moving him from turf to dirt. Bullet work says he’s ready for quick trip to winner’s circle. Wager: Win.”

Belmont Races Nos. 7-10 (3:47 p.m. ET/12:47 p.m. PT)

Duane Colucci likes $.50 Pick 4 (cost $90)

Race 7: 1,2,6,7,8

Race 8: 1,2,3,6,7,9

Race 9: 1,2

Race 10: 8,11,12

Keeneland  Races Nos. 7-10 (4:12 p.m. ET/1:12 p.m. PT)

Ed Sehon likes the following $.50 Pick 4 (cost $72)

Race 7: 1,2,5

Race 8: 2,3,4,8

Race 9: 1,3,5

Race 10: 1,3,4,6

Duane Colucci likes $.50 Pick 4 (cost $80)

Race 7: 1,2,5,6

Race 8: 1,2,3,4,8

Race 9: 1,2,4,5

Race 10: 1,4

Keeneland Race No. 8 (4:44 p.m. ET/1:44 p.m. PT)

Duane Colucci likes #8 Flippant (15-1) in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes. “This Victoria Oliver trainee has been sharp lately, winning three in a row and has a nice Oct. 3 workout. Jockey Rafael Bejarano has also been on fire! The race on Aug. 7 was a super time in 1:39 2/5. A hot pace should help her closing kick. Bet 8 to Win and key 8 over 1,2,3, and 4 in exactas, trifectas and reverse.”

Keeneland Race No. 9 (5:16 p.m. ET/2:16 p.m. PT)

Dave Tuley likes #1 Malibu Star (5-1 morning line). “This 4-year-old colt has been off since February, but jockey John Velazquez should have him sitting just off the pace in this allowance event at a mile. His bullet work on Oct. 8 (and actually three bullets in his last three works!) says he should be ready to fire off the layoff at a fair price against this field. Wager: Win (and Place only if he goes off higher than morning line).”

Santa Anita Race No. 5 (6:06 p.m. ET/3:06 p.m. PT)

Dave Tuley likes #2 Cedar’s Stars (12-1 morning line). “This 1 1/8-mile turf race should set up for a closer, and we have one here in this 3-year-old filly who won her first race last time out, so hopefully she’s figured out what to do. She started her career over in England, but has closed her last two races at Del Mar and Golden Gate and should be making a big move in the stretch under Kent Desormeaux. Trainer Michael McCarthy also hits with 12 percent of his horses taking on winners for the first time. Wager: Win and Place.”

Woodbine Race No. 10 (5:44 p.m. ET/2:44 p.m. PT)

John Lauro likes #3 Olympic Runner (6-1 morning line) in the Grade 2 Nearctic Stakes. “Olympic Runner shortens up after failing to fire in the Woodbine Mile.”
