This is the 11th installment of “Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” for the week of May 27-31 as me and my stable of handicapping friends look for value at the horseracing tracks that are still running during the coronavirus pandemic.
It was nice to carry the Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes team for once as my top Saturday picks here and on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod won Churchill Downs’ The Winning Colors at 13/1 and the Mint Julep at a whopping 25/1 (full recaps at the end of the column after today’s picks).
On Sunday, our crew has five plays from Gulfstream Park, Churchill Downs and Santa Anita (plus a late double from John Lauro) as we try to close out a winning weekend. All plays are being posted after Sunday’s early scratches. Good luck today – and every day.
Churchill Downs Race No. 7 (4:08 p.m. ET/1:08 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #8 Cold Smoke (7/2 morning line). “Hard-charging 3-year-old son of Tapiture broke his maiden by 5 1/2 lengths last out in Oaklawn Park sprint. He returns after six-week break vs. full field of $30,000 claimers going 6 furlongs. Accomplished conditioner Roberto Diodoro, three wins in seven starts at meet, retains services of NY-based jockey David Cohen. Wager: Win and Exacta box of 1, 8, 9 & 10.”
Gulfstream Park Race No. 8 (4:21 p.m. ET/1:21 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #3 First Deal (9/2 morning line). “This 4-year-old colt drops in for a tag ($50,000) after facing tougher stakes company this past winter. The winner of three straight sprints last summer at Monmouth Park, First Deal appears ready to return to that form for his sharp new trainer Jorge Delgado (15-4-4-1). Proven ability to rate off the pace combined with the services of veteran rider Rajiv Maragh gets job done vs. speedy six-horse field at fair price. Wager: Win and Exacta box of 1, 3, 4 & 6.”
Santa Anita Race No. 4 (5:06 p.m. ET/2:06 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #1 Seven Scents (6/1 morning line). “Craig Lewis trainee had a useful prep at Los Alamitos followed by a 59.4 bullet work and now drops in for a career low price tag and returns to turf. Lewis and jockey Jorge Velez have a $3.76 ROI when teaming up and Lewis has a huge $9.09 ROI in turf sprints and 23% and a $6.45 ROI in turf races overall in a 57-race sample.”
Gulfstream Race No. 10 (5:24 p.m. ET/2:24 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #4 Harryhee (20/1 morning line). There’s not much speed in this $16,000 optional claimer and Harryhee should be the speed of the speed with a chance to steal this at a price (though he’ll have to hold off 6/5 favorite #6 Whiskey Sunrise). Wager: Win & Place, plus Exacta box 4 w/ All.
Santa Anita Race No. 7 (6:42 p.m. ET/3:42 p.m. PT)
John Lauro likes #2 Ce Ce (3/5 morning line). “Ce Ce is the best older filly or mare at Santa Anita right now. Suggested play is Win bet on #2 Ce Ce and Daily Double with #8 Tonahutu (3/1), who is dropping from a stakes race into the $32,000 claimer in Race 8.”
Prior day’s results:
Churchill Downs Race No. 7
Dave Tuley liked the three closers, with #4 Bell’s the One (15/1 morning line) listed first…went off 13/1…ran 6th of 8 as expected through first four furlong of six-furlong race, began rally at the quarter pole and blew away field in the stretch to win by three lengths, paying $28.20 to Win & $9.80 to Place…I also mentioned using the 2 and 8 in exotics with my closers and the $2 Exacta paid $107.60 and the $1 Trifecta paid $151.90…another of my long shots, #5 Unique Factor, ran 4th, so I wish I could say I had the $1 Superfecta for $1,106.80 but I didn’t.
Gulfstream Races Nos. 8 -11
Ed Sehon liked the following $.50 Pick 4…he hit the first two races but didn’t have the 50/1 shots that won the last two legs
Race 8: #1 Venezuelan Hug
; #2 Blood Moon; #6 Let’s Play Hardball; #9 Bad Beat Brian; #11 City Park
Race 9: #2 Yodel E. A. Who
; #3 Win With Pride; #6 Small Fortune
Race 10: #5 Our Country; #6 Mystic Lancelot; #7-Unconquered Lea
Race 11: #3 Power; #7 Traffic Trouble; #8 Queen’splate Nolan
Churchill Downs Race No. 9
Duane Colucci liked #11 Dixieincandyland (9/2 morning line)...went off 3/1…raced midpack in 7th most of the race and rallied in the stretch but got bumped in close quarters to finish 5th, only a length and a quarter from the winner (worth looking at next time if she can get a clean trip).
Gulfstream Park Race No. 10
Ed Sehon liked #5 Our Country (5/1 morning line)…went off as 2/1 favorite…stalked pace early in 3rd but didn’t threaten in the stretch and finished 6th of 8.
Churchill Downs Race No.11
Ed Sehon liked #1 Juliet Foxtrot (5/2 morning line)…went off as 8/5 favorite…stalked pacesetter through first six furlongs of mile and a sixteenth race, actually took lead in the stretch but got passed by a bunch of closers to finish 6th of 14.
Duane Colucci liked #6 Nay Lady Nay (4/1 morning line)…went off 7/1…stalked leaders early but never really threatened, finishing 8th of 14
Dave Tuley liked #7 Secret Message (8/1)…went off 13/1…raced in 8th through opening six furlongs of mile and a sixteenth race and then rallied five-wide to circle rest of the field and just get up to win by a head, paying $53.40 to Win & $21 to Place.
Santa Anita Race No. 7
Dave Tuley liked #6 Little Bird (15/1 but was scratched), #1 Guitty (8/1 morning line and went off 21/1) and #7 Red Lark (12/1 morning line and went off 16/1)…Guitty race last early and was only able to get up to finish 5th of 8 while Red Lark sat well off the early pace and made up ground but was only able to finish 4th.
