(Note: this has been updated from the overnight version after early Sunday scratches with two best bets and a Pick 5 from Ed Sehon.)
This is the (hopefully) lucky 13th edition of “Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” for the week of June 10-14 as me and my stable of handicapping friends continue to look for value at the horseracing tracks that are still running during the coronavirus pandemic.
Saturday was a promising day as several of our runners looked live, but our team went a combined 0-for-7 on the win end with just two places, though we cut our losses with a pair of exactas from Duane Colucci (who also gave out a winning trifecta box) and Ed Sehon. Full recaps are at the end of this column after today’s plays.
On Sunday, Colucci, Sehon and I have two best bets apiece on races from coast to coast, plus Sehon offers a Pick 5 at Churchill. These have been updated after early scratches at Belmont and Churchill.
Good luck today (and every day).
Belmont Race No. 3 (2:23 p.m. ET/11:23 a.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #7 Stolen Holiday (3/1 morning line). “Shug McGaughey has a nice one here in this War Front filly. She is a half-sister to three Grade 1 winners, she crushed in her debut at Tampa Bay Downs and now gets Jose Ortiz in the saddle. Ortiz and McGaughey are connecting at 25% this year. Bet Win on #7 and box with #5 in the exacta.”
Churchill Race 6 (3:42 p.m. ET/12:42 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes the following $.50 Pick 5 ($163,012 carryover)
Race No. 6 - #5 Flight Time (4/1 morning line); #6 Match Play (5/1); #7 Crush It (4/1) & #11 Long On Luck (12/1)
Race No. 7 - #1 Big Base & #1A Hero for Hire (7/2); #2 Heaven’s Whisper (3/1) & #3 Its Cold in Dehere (5/2)
Race No. 8 - #2 Magic Star (5/2)
Race No. 9 - #7 High Proof (5/1); #9 Background (6/1); #10 Toledo (3/1) & #13 Well Connected (3/1)
Race No. 10 - #5 Master Ryan (7/2); #6 Oak Hill (10/1) & #8 Duplicity (2/1).
Belmont Race No. 6 (3:59 p.m. ET/12:59 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #8 Uhtred (9/2 morning line). “Promising son of English Cannel returns to action since concluding his sophomore turf campaign in a sharp third-place effort at Tampa Bay Downs last December. Before leaving Sunshine State, meet’s hottest trainer Christophe Clement (26-7-4-2) put 4-year-old through a series of regular works over Payson training surfaces. With major rider upgrade to Junior Alvarado and cutback to mile on Widener Turf Couse, look for him to be close to pace before making winning move. Wager: Win & box #8 in exactas with 2, 4 & 6.”
Churchill Race No. 8 (4:46 p.m. ET/1:46 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #2 Magic Star (5/2 morning line). “Following three solid graded stakes efforts in Florida, half-million-dollar son of Scat Daddy comes to Louisville fresh and ready to fire in this super-deep allowance affair for fillies and mares. Look for steady jockey David Cohen to make the most of rare chance to ride for four-time trainer-of-the-year Chad Brown, who also sends out #11 Catch a Bird. Wager: Win and exacta box of 2 & 11.
Belmont Race No. 9 (5:36 p.m. ET/2:36 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #1 Mission Wrapitup (12/1 morning line). There’s a ton of speed in Sunday’s featured race, the $100,000 Mike Lee Stakes, and this 3-year-old gelding should benefit from a ground-saving trip on the rail and then having first run on the other closers. If looking for another live long shot to team up with in exotics, I like #8 Three Jokers who should be part of the speed duel up front but is shortening up from a mile to seven furlongs.
Belmont Race 10 (6:08 p.m. ET/3:08 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #1 Reckless Spirit (12/1 morning line). “Trainer James Bond takes this colt over and puts him up for a tag. Reckless Spirit should be close to the lead and Luis Saez straight out of quarantine takes the mount. Saez and Bond hit at a 29% clip with a $2.84 ROI. Should be a price.”
Golden Gate Race No. 8 (6:55 p.m. ET/3:55 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #3 Majestic Eagle (10/1 morning line). The $250,000 Grade 3 San Francisco Mile is the richest race on Sunday and draws a field of runners that have been knocking around the lower rungs of graded and ungraded stakes and even some optional claimers. The entrant with the best chance to show improvement is Majestic Eagle, who was gelded since his last start in the Grade 3 Thunder Road at Santa Anita in February. Veteran trainer Neil Drysdale knows how to place horses and he’s had some well-spaced that make him look ready to fire in his return. Wager: Win & Place.
Prior day’s results:
Belmont Race No. 5
Duane Colucci liked #2 Pipes (10/1 morning line)….went off 7/1…sat just a few lengths off the leaders through the opening six furlongs of the mile and a sixteenth race but had nothing for the stretch, finishing 8th of 9.
Belmont Race No. 6
Ed Sehon liked #6 Honey Won’t (6/1 morning line)…ran well off the pace through opening four furlongs of six-furlong race, then came with a rush, finishing 2nd by just a neck…the $2 exacta (8-6), which Sehon gave as part of a 4-6-8-9 exacta box, paid $29.80.
Belmont Race No. 7
Duane Colucci liked #2 Dovima (6/1 morning line)…went off 9/1…sat a few lengths off the pace and then battled through the stretch but lost by a nose…Colucci recommended using the 2 with 3-5-10 in exactas and trifectas and the $2 exacta (5-2) paid $36.20 and the $1 tri (5-2-3) paid $77.50.
Churchill Races No. 8-11
Ed Sehon liked the following $.50 Pick 4 (cost $72; hit one of four):
Race 8 - #1 Dixiecandyland; #5 Hidden Facts; #10 Even Best & #11 Queen of Shades
Race 9 - #1 Major Attraction & #1A Fast Cash; #6 Shanghai’s Dream & #8 Company Clown
Race 10 - #1 Miss T Too; #2 Figure of Speech, #5 Scolding & #14 Brittle and Yoo.
Race 11 - #5 Arklow; #6 Tiz a Slam; & #12 Admission Office
Belmont Race No. 9
Dave Tuley liked #4 Blamed (10/1 morning line)…went off 6/1…set blistering early fractions (probably too fast) in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps but was bypassed by the closers in the stretch, finishing 4th of 6.
Churchill Race No. 10
Ed Sehon liked #2 Figure of Speech (7/2 morning line). “Four-time trainer-of-the-year Chad Brown sends out another promising young filly in dirt allowance sprint. When last seen at Saratoga last summer, she finished a respectable third in the Grade 1 Spinaway, making the jump from maiden win to high-level stakes in only her second start. After seven months rest and a steady stream of maintenance works, filly appears ready to fire under emerging big-time pilot Tyler Gaffalione. Wager: Win and exacta box of 1, 2, 5 & 14.”
Golden Gate Race No. 7
Dave Tuley liked #2 Mylittlerunaway (12/1 morning line).went off 6/1…didn’t get to the lead as I was hoping, stalked leaders through the first six furlongs of the mile race but had no response in the stretch, finishing 5th of 7.
Churchill Race No. 11
Dave Tuley liked #1 Perfect Tapatino (20/1 morning line)…went off 55/1…ran 8th of 12 most of the race, off the pace as expected right with eventual winner Admission Office, but unfortunately that’s right where Perfect Tapatino finished, a well-beaten 8th.
