This is an EXTRA! edition of “Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” as I neglected to include Monday’s date to cap off the Memorial Weekend in our regular weekly column at the VSiN.com website.
After enduring a week-long slump, our stable of handicapping friends had a second straight exciting day on Sunday as I just missed with a 31/1 shot at Gulfstream and Duane Colucci capped the day with a 9/2 winner at Santa Anita (recaps of all of our holiday weekend plays are at the end of this column after Monday’s picks).
For Monday, Colucci and I have two plays apiece (including different takes on the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita, so hopefully we have that surrounded like Colucci and John Lauro did with the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on Saturday). Our colleague Ed Sehon added two Churchill plays on Monday morning at 8:55 a.m. ET/5:55 a.m. PT (as has become our custom here, check back in the noon ET/9 a.m. PT hour for any changes to our plays).
Churchill Downs Race No. 5 (3:04 p.m. ET/12:04 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #3 Kurilov (3/1 morning line). “Consistent, accomplished old pro (in money 18 of 27 starts with in excess of $370,000 in earnings) drops into $32,000 claimer for successful conditioner Brad Cox. Seven-year-old son of 2010 Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky regains services of leading Kentucky-based rider Florent Geroux for 1 1/16-mile test vs. eight others. Look for him late. Wager: Win and box in exactas with 4, 6 &7.“
Churchill Downs Race No. 7 (4:08 p.m. ET/1:08 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #2 Union Maiden (7/2 morning line). “Give me $425,000, 3-year-old daughter of highly productive sire Union Rags, throw in HOF rider Javier Castellano, making her second start for super-trainer Chad Brown, then you can show me way to windows. After hitting gate in her debut at Gulfstream in February as odds-on choice, filly rallied to finish fifth within a couple of lengths of winner. If gal gets a clean break today, look for front-running effort in dirt sprint. Wager: Win.”
Churchill Downs Race No. 9 (5:12 p.m. ET/2:12 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #12 Ramsey Solution (6/1 morning line). “This horse crushed over this course in November, then put together two nice polytrack efforts at Turfway Park. Wesley Ward runners have been alive this meet so far and he is reunited with jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who rode him when won over this turf course. Key him with #5 Limonite & #7 Morocco in exotics.”
Gulfstream Race No. 11 (5:55 p.m. ET/2:55 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #3 Wanderlust (12/1 morning line) and #6 Judy’s Way (6/1). I believe these two will be the speed of the speed in this mile dirt (slop?) race and either could wire this short six-horse field. I’ll bet Win on the one that goes off at 10/1 or higher (maybe both). I do fear the 7/5 favorite, #1 Elusive Molly, so I’ll box her with the #3 and the #6.
Santa Anita Race No. 9 (7:38 p.m. ET/4:38 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #1 Without Parole (4/1 morning line). “Trainer Chad Brown starts two world-class turf milers here in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile. I believe Without Parole is the slightly better option with a nice effort in the Breeders’ Cup Mile over this course, closing in a fast 22.78 seconds vs. the world’s best. He will have to hold off his stablemate #8 Raging Bull, who will be flying late to complete the Exacta.”
Dave Tuley likes #7 Majestic Eagle (20/1). Majestic Eagle won the Grade 3 American over this turf course last September, but this is actually a step up in class vs. this Grade 1 field. Neil Drysdale trains this first-time gelding and he knows every trick in the book (and geldings often show improvement), so I’m also trusting that Drysdale wouldn’t be sending out Majestic Eagle in this spot unless he really felt he could handle it. Win & Place, and I’ll box in exotics with Colucci’s #1 Without Parole & #8 Raging Bull.

Churchill Race No. 10
Duane Colucci likes #6 Ny Traffic (10/1 morning line)…went off 7/2…sat right off the pace through first six furlongs, made move in stretch and grabbed lead but was unable to hold off winner…recommended to key and reverse with #2 Pneumatic and #10 Maxfield, with the 10-6 Exacta paying $25.20 for $2 and the Trifecta paying $41.80 for $1.

Gulfstream Race No. 9
Dave Tuley liked #1 Indimaaj (10/1 morning line)…went off at 31/1 in six-horse field…”strode awkwardly” away from the gate according to the race chart, though rushed up to sit 3rd behind the pacesetters…looked like he could pull the major upset but was passed by Blue Buff, the even-money favorite, though Indimaaj battled back gamely to only lose by half a length…paid $15.20 to Place & completed healthy $2 Exacta of $69.20.
Churchill Downs Race No. 9
Duane Colucci liked #4 Art of Almost (5/1 morning line)…went off 5/1… sat just behind the pacesetters in 3rd through the first six furlongs, made her move but was passed late by 70/1 long shot that came from nowhere… lived up to name as “almost” good enough to win, but it took the unlikeliest of long shots to beat her…paid $6.60 to Place.
Gulfstream Race No. 10
Dave Tuley liked #4 Nettleton (10/1morning line), but he was SCRATCHED on Sunday morning.
Churchill Downs Race No. 10
Ed Sehon liked #2 Mojovation (3/1morning line)…went off as 6/5 favorite…broke slowly and race far back early, came on in stretch but was only able to get up for 3rd.
Santa Anita Race No. 6
Duane Colucci liked #2 Red King (7/2 morning line).was racing in 4th after opening quarter mile and dropped to 7th…was still 7th well into the stretch but then went four-wide and made a huge move to get up to win by a nose, paying $11 to Win and $5 to Place.
