As we wrote yesterday, we missed having mid-week CFB MACtion here in the Tuley’s Takes home office, but at least we hit with our best bet in the NBA on Wednesday night.

And it was a rocking-chair winner for a change as the Cavaliers (whether you got them at the opening price of + 6 or + 7 at most books or didn’t bet them until closer to tip-off at + 3), as they jumped out to a 31-16 lead over the Heat in the first quarter and coasted to a 111-85 victory. That was nice, especially since some of our NBA picks have grabbed early leads only to give them up and still not cover, as the Cavs came through for us for the second Wednesday in a mirror. Make us not miss MACtion so much!

Let’s get to the Wednesday night recaps, highlighted by a night where NBA dogs were actually above .500 straight-up. I’ll then have a small best bet for Thursday night and get started tracking our CFB and NFL best bets for the weekend.

Wednesday’s recaps

NBA: Underdogs went 5-4 SU and 7-2 ATS. Outright upsets were by the Hawks (+ 2 at Pacers), Magic (+ 8 vs. Nuggets), Cavaliers (+ 3 at Heat), Rockets (+ 2.5 at Thunder) and Kings (+ 6 at Clippers), plus 76ers (+ 3 at Celtics) and Hornets (+ 9 at Bucks) covered in losses. Overs went 7-2 on the night, but Unders still lead 180-145-3 (55.4 percent) on the season.

CBB: North Carolina upset No. 24 Michigan 72-51 as a 2.5-point home underdog. Other Top 25 teams to lose Wednesday were No. 12 BYU, 72-65 to Utah Valley (+ 13, + 650 on the money line) in OT; No. 14 Florida, 75-67 to Oklahoma (+ 1); and No. 18 Memphis, 82-79 to Georgia (+ 11.5).

NHL: Faves went 4-1 with the Kraken-Red Wings game closing pick-’em. The lone upset was by the Ducks (+ 145 vs. Golden Knights). The Rangers (-180 vs. Flyers), Maple Leafs (-130 vs. Avalanche), Canucks (-120 at Senators) and Oilers (-130 vs. Penguins) won and covered -1.5 on the puck line. Overs went 4-1.

Thursday’s Takes

6-point teaser Saints + 10.5/Over 41.5: This isn’t a strong opinion (and it’s not a traditional Wong Teaser for those who follow such things) as I passed on the Saints plus the points in Point Spread Weekly, though I took them on the VSiN NFL Consensus page along with the Over. The Saints are slumping and going with Taysom Hill at QB, which should at least provide a spark even if they’re not able to pull the upset or stay within a FG like would be needed with the spread. The Saints are No. 1 against the run, so that should also cause Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense to open it up and help this get Over. Like I said, not the strongest opinion on this but I like it better than anything on the CBB or NBA board.

And here’s my best bets from PSW. For our purposes here, we’re just concerned with how the lines are moving and if we should bet ASAP or wait until the weekend to place our bets at the best number.

CFB

Western Kentucky -3 vs. Texas-San Antonio: No, that wasn’t a typo in PSW as the line was pick-’em when I sent in my selections on Tuesday morning and the Hilltoppers were bet to favoritism during the day before we went to press. I hope you got the lower numbers as it’s not up to -3. I would pass at that number as a lot of value has been lost, but I still believe they’re the right side in the Conference USA title game.

Wake Forest + 3 vs. Pittsburgh: This line is pretty solid, though some public-betting figures indicate it could rise to 3.5, so I’ll wait to bet but ready to fire if I see the market moving to 2.5.

Iowa + 11 vs. Michigan: Iowa plays defense and I think this should be a low-scoring game (total is 43.5), so points could be at a premium. Michigan, which obviously has the motivation of playing for a CFB Playoff berth, could also have a letdown after finally beating Ohio State.

NFL

Lions + 7 vs. Vikings: I’d grab this now as it looks more likely to dip to 6.5 instead of going higher.

Falcons + 11.5 vs. Buccaneers: Looking solid, though some books at 11 so grab the best line you can.

Giants + 5 at Dolphins: Line is down to 4, so bet that ASAP.

Steelers + 4.5 vs. Ravens: Also looking solid. Public might bet higher, but some books are at 4 so I’d bet now.

Broncos + at Chiefs: Some at 9.5 so grab 10 ASAP.

Good luck today (and every day!).
