Tuley's Takes Today: Wednesday recap, Thursday best bets (1/6)

We’ve written before how much we miss the mid-week MACtion football games and now Thursday night football here in the Tuley’s Takes home office, but after two straight perfect nights with our NHL First-Period bets, we can get used to this!

If you were following along with our plays on Tuesday night, you’ll recall how all three of our 1P Overs cashed with plenty of time to spare. Well, Wednesday night was just as easy as the Oilers and Maple Leafs (our best bet at 1P Over 1.5 -145) both scored a goal within the first 10 minutes of the first period to easily cash that bet. I wish I had parlayed it with my recommended bonus play on the Blues-Penguins Under 1.5 + 115 as they played a scoreless first period, so that bet was never in doubt. I hope some of you cashed on that as well.

So, let’s try to keep it going as we look at Thursday night’s NHL card below. But, first, let’s recap the rest of Wednesday night’s betting action.

Wednesday’s recaps

NBA: Faves/dogs split 5-5 SU with Jazz-Nuggets closing pick-'em, but dogs led 6-3-1 ATS with the Thunder (+ 9.5) covering in a 98-90 loss at the Timberwolves and the push coming in the Nets-Pacers game as the Nets (-8) beat the Pacers 129-121. The upsets were by the Rockets (+ 7.5 at Wizards), Spurs (+ 7.5 at Celtics), Mavericks (+ 4.5 vs. Warriors), Raptors (+ 2 at Bucks) and Hawks (+ 1.5 at Kings). Unders went 6-5.

CBB: No. 11 Iowa State beat No. 25 Texas Tech 51-47 in Wednesday's only game between Top 25 teams, but the Cyclones did NOT cover as 5.5-point home favorites. The game stayed way Under the betting total of 127. No other ranked team lost SU on the night.

NHL: Faves went 2-0 Wednesday with the Maple Leafs (-300 in 4-2 win vs. Oilers) and Penguins (-130 in 5-3 win vs. Blues) both winning as home faves and also both covering -1.5 puck line. Overs went 1-0-1 with the push on Oilers-Maple Leafs (6).

Thursday’s Take

Penguins-Flyers First-Period Under 1.5 + 115: We’ve been riding 1P Overs as favorites (usually falling in the -125 to -150 range) the past few days, but as you noticed above we threw in a 1P Under. Well, we’re calling it our best bet for Thursday with the Penguins-Flyers 1P Under 1.5 at + 115. The Penguins improved to 21-11 with 1P Unders on Wednesday while the Flyers are 16-17, so that makes them a combined 56.9 percent. Of course, we know we don’t even need to hit 50 percent long-term to make a profit at + 115. My secondary plays (which we’ve been sweeping as well) are the Blue Jackets-Devils 1P Over 1.5 -135 and the Jets-Avalanche 1P Over 1.5 -135 as the Blue Jackets are 21-10 with 1P Overs and the Avalanche are 20-9 (all stats are from @PSUOtto on Twitter). I’ll decide during the day Thursday how I’ll be playing these, though I suspect I’ll bet them all in a round-robin of 2’s and 3’s as we’d show a profit if hitting 2-of-3 and clean up if we sweep again.

We’ll add our updated football bets for the weekend in Friday’s edition of Tuley’s Takes Today.
