Tuley's Takes Today: Tuesday recaps, Contest Corner, Wednesday pick (10/20)

By Dave Tuley  ( senior reporter)

October 20, 2021 04:48 AM

Tuesday was another fun sports betting day here in the Tuley’s Takes home office as we had two MLB playoff games, plus NBA added to the daily mix along with another big NHL card.

Unfortunately, we lost our biggest bet of the day with the Nets in the NBA opener against the defending champion Bucks, but at least the Astros and Dodgers won as we have futures tickets on each (Astros to win their series against the Red Sox and the Dodgers to win the World Series).

Let’s get to the general betting recaps from last night, then take a peek into Contest Corner before trying to find the best bet on Wednesday’s betting menu plus an early NFL pick.

Tuesday’s recaps

MLB: Astros (+ 115 road underdogs) beat Red Sox 9-2 late Tuesday to even the American League Championship Series at 2-2. The game went Over the betting total of 10 runs with the final run in the Astros' seven-run 9th inning -- a “Bad Beat” for Under bettors.

Earlier, the Dodgers (-180 home faves) rallied to beat the Braves 6-5 to pull within 2-1 in the NLCS. The game went Over 7.5 runs. Faves/dogs and home/road both split 1-1 on Tuesday while Overs went 2-0. Faves lead 4-3 in this round, home teams lead 5-2 and Overs improved to 6-1. In LDS and LCS rounds, faves lead 16-8, home teams also lead 16-8 and Overs lead 15-9

NBA: Warriors (+ 3.5) upset the Lakers 121-114 as road underdogs late Tuesday on the opening night of the NBA regular season. The game Over betting total of 226 points.

Earlier, the defending champion Bucks (-1.5) routed the Nets 127-104 as short home favorites after getting their rings. The game stayed Under the total of 233.5 points. Faves/dogs and home/road split 1-1 SU and ATS, and Over/Unders were also 1-1.

NHL: Favorites went 6-5 Tuesday with only the Devils, Red Wings and Islanders covering the -1.5 puck line. Biggest upsets were by the Sharks (+ 140 in 5-0 road win at Canadiens) and Sabres (+ 132 in 5-2 home win vs. Canucks). Unders went 6-4-1 with the push in Kraken-Devils (6) game

Contest Corner

DOS AMIGO, who went 13-1-1 in NFL Weeks 4-6, won $75,000 in the Westgate SuperContest’s second 3-week mini-contest while MLCPIX and VOLS1223 (both 13-2) tied for second and will collect $15,000 apiece. The SuperContest’s five co-leaders after Week 6 (CARDINAL, FYTE ON, JOHNNY VEGAS, defending champion ODBMG and XERRI 1) are also the co-winners of the first 6-week mini-contest and will receive $33,500 apiece.

Wednesday’s Takes

Astros (+ 110) at Red Sox: A lot is being made of how a missed called third strike by home-plate umpire Laz Diaz led to the Astros’ 7-run 9th inning last night, but I also saw a graphic that showed that Diaz missed 21 strike/ball decisions in the game and the Red Sox scored their only two runs after benefitting from a missed call third strike as well. All that being said, the Astros took advantage and came through with the hits when they needed it the most. Now, while Game 4 was a must-win, the Astros also have a must-win in Wednesday’s pivotal Game 5 so they don’t need to sweep the last two games when this series goes back to Houston. I still have the Astros as the better offense and most likely to come through again tonight. We also get Framber Valdez (11-6, 3.37 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) against Chris Sale (5-1, 4.08 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) in a battle of southpaws. This was the same matchup in Game 1 when the Astros won 5-4 and I’m looking for a repeat.

Broncos (+ 3.5) at Browns: I’ll add the rest of my weekend football plays from Point Spread Weekly to Thursday’s edition of this column, but just want to give a heads-up to anyone out there tailing our underdog plays that you probably need to grab the Broncos + 3.5 if you’re with us in Thursday night’s game as they’re disappearing pretty quick.

Good luck today (and every day!).
