Tuley's Takes Today: Tuesday recaps, Circa Quarter prizes, Wednesday best bet (12/8)

“You can’t win ‘em all.”

If you were to watch games with me in the Tuley’s Takes home office or in one of the sportsbooks in Las Vegas, you would hear my mutter a lot of cliches like the one above that I found myself saying while watching our best bet on the Spurs + 2.5 vs. the Knicks slip away as the Knicks pulled away to win 121-109.

It wasn’t a good night to be an underdog bettor as favorites went 3-0 ATS in the NBA and 6-3 in the NHL, so I actually felt fortunate that I only lost one bet.

I have another saying for nights like Tuesday night (and I believe I created this one): “Favorites have to win sometimes so the chalk-eaters keep betting that way.” I really believe that to be true. If chalk bettors lost all the time, they’d stop betting the favorites higher and higher and giving us more value on the dogs.

So, we’ll take our occasional lumps and just hope we don’t have a ton of action on nights when the favorites rule.

Let’s recap the rest of the Tuesday night betting action (including Contest Corner with the Quarter prize winners at Circa as those became official on Tuesday), and then I have another dog in the NBA on Wednesday night.

Tuesday’s recaps

NBA: Faves went 3-0 SU and ATS Tuesday night as the Nets (-1.5 in 102-99 win at Mavericks), Knicks (-1.5 in 121-109 win at Spurs) and Lakers (-3 in 117-102 win vs. Celtics) all won and covered their short spreads. Unders went 2-1 and lead 196-165-5 (54.3 percent) on the season.

NHL: Faves went 6-3 Tuesday with the Hurricanes-Jets game closing pick-'em. The upsets were by the Blues (+ 140 in 4-3 OT win vs. Panthers), Wild (+ 105 in 4-1 win at Oilers) and Sharks (+ 120 in 5-3 win vs. Flames. Overs went 7-3 on the night.

CBB: Texas Tech upset No. 13 Tennessee 57-52 in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The Raiders closed as 4-point underdogs and + 155 on the money line as Tennessee was the lone Top 25 team to lose on the night. The game stayed way Under the betting total of 137.5 points even with the overtime session.

Contest Corner

BIZMAN went 18-2 to win $171,750 in the Circa Sports Million’s 3rd Quarter (NFL Weeks 10-13). The strange amount comes from CSM exceeding its $4 million guarantee as there were 4,087 entrants this year at $1,000 apiece, so the extra $87,000 was split evenly and added to the original $150,000 first-place prize for each quarter. Second place is worth $50,000 with $25,000 for third, but there was a seven-way tie for 2nd at 17-3, so they each will collect $10,714.29. Those seven are 7 HILLS FOOTBALL, FEZZIK, Iron Mountain-2, JOHHNYBRAVO, NEVER EA$Y, PIGSKIN LOVER and Sweet Picks Bro-3.

The 3rd Quarter Booby Prize of $25,000 for worst record in Weeks 10-13 goes to TRADING LACES at 2-18. TRADING LACES went 1-4 in Week 10 and then ran off 14 straight “losing” picks to clinch the Booby Prize at 1-18 before actually “winning” with Patriots + 2.5 on Monday night.

Wednesday’s Take

Bulls + 2.5 at Cavaliers: Cleveland has been very good to me the past two weeks as they’ve covered eight games in a row. Hopefully you followed along with us the past two Wednesdays when I gave them out as my best bet of the day against the Suns and the Heat as they came through both times. I wish I had shared my bets with you over the weekend as I bet them + 3 against the Wizards on Friday, + 5 against the Jazz on Sunday and + 8.5 against the Bucks on Monday when most of our attention here was on football. So, yes, I really like this Cavaliers team as I’ve written a couple of times that the oddsmakers and the public hadn’t caught up with them yet (and note that in their current 8-game cover streak that only one of those games – Nov. 27 vs. the Magic – had the Cavs as the favorite. Now, a lot of people are noticing and, in fact, my VSiN colleague Jonathan Von Tobel even wrote about them in this week’s Point Spread Weekly as they have the best spread record in the Association at 18-5-2 ATS (78.3 percent). The bandwagon is filling up as they’re now 2.5-point home favorites against the Bulls (17-8 and just half a game behind the Nets for the best record in the Eastern Conference). As good as the Cavs have been to me (and I was actually planning to take them as home dogs here), I have to take the points here with the better team

Good luck today (and every day!).
