Tuesday was a day that celebrated sports without the need for sports betting with the focus on Stephen Curry breaking the NBA’s all-time 3-point record at Madison Square Garden (I spent the better part of the night outside the Tuley’s Take home office and attending my son’s first middle school band concert, so maybe that’s part of the reason for my perspective). Oh, sure, there were people that bet props tied to Curry’s pursuit of the record, but it was a pure sports moment that was refreshing.
With our NHL First-Period Over round-robin, it all depended on which numbers you were able to get. We posted yesterday with lines that were available overnight at William Hill here in Nevada with Over 2 in the Senators-Panthers and Maple Leafs-Oilers games and Over 1.5 in the Rangers-Avalanche. The Senators and Panthers were tied 1-1 after the First Period, so that was a push on Over 2, but a lot of books used Over 1.5 -160, so that was a win for us and anyone able to grab that line (we had our big 2019 winter/spring run with these First-Period Overs before a lot of books started posting 2's on these). The Maple Leafs led the Oilers 1-0 after the First Period, so that didn’t matter which line you got. The Avalanche led the Rangers 2-0, so that was a winner at Over 1.5 -145.
So, as always, it pays to shop around and hopefully you were able to play at a book that offered -1.5 on the Senators-Panthers game.
Let’s recap Tuesday’s betting results before making a play for Wednesday. We'll add our weekend football bets (bowls and NFL Week 15) on Thursday.
NBA: Faves went 3-0 SU Tuesday, including Warriors (-5.5) covering in 105-96 win at Knicks as Stephen Curry broke all-time 3-point record. Suns (-1) also covered in 111-107 OT win at Blazers. Faves were only 2-1 ATS as Nets (-4) did NOT cover in 131-129 OT win vs. Raptors. Dogs still lead 52-43-1 ATS (54.7 percent) in December with 1 game closing pick-'em. Overs went 2-1 Tuesday night and still lead 51-44-2 (53.7 percent) in December, but Unders still lead 222-188-6 (54.1 percent) on the season.
CBB: No. 6 Alabama was the only Top 25 team to go down to defeat on Tuesday night, losing 92-68 at Memphis as the Tigers did it as 4-point home underdogs and + 150 on the money line.
NHL: Faves went 8-4 Tuesday with the only upset by the Senators (+ 230 in 8-2 rout at Panthers), Sabres (+ 210 at Jets), Blues (+ 135 at Stars) and Kraken (+ 115 at Sharks). Unders went 6-5-1 with the push in the Avalanche's 4-2 win vs. the Rangers with a betting total of 6 goals.
Clippers + 8 at Jazz: The Jazz are on a seven-game winning streak, but the Clippers haven’t been too shabby themselves with four straight wins, including a 111-95 win over the Suns on Sunday even with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George being out. This line just seems a little too high, especially as the Jazz are 9-4 SU at home but just 7-6 ATS as they tend to squeak out wins. It will be tough for the Clippers to get the outright upset (especially if short-handed if George, who is listed as questionable, isn't able to go), but we just need them the rest of the team to step it up again to keep it close.
Good luck today (and every day!).
