Tuesday was spent in the Tuley’s Takes home office writing the regular “Tuley’s Takes” column for Point Spread Weekly and running some errands.
When that was all done, we were able to settle in for a leisurely night of NHL, NBA and college basketball. We had to wait for 6 p.m. PT for our best bet on the Panthers-Flames First-Period Over 1.5 -140 (though I saw it get bet up to -160). The Flames scored 4:36 into the contest and then added a second goal 11:36 into the first period to clinch our winning bet without much of a sweat. Note: the period ended up Flames 2-0, so those who were only able to get 1P Over 2 had to settle for a push, so it’s important to shop for the best lines.
Here’s all my recaps of Tuesday’s betting action, and then we’ll try to do this again with our best bet of the day.
CBB: Florida State (+ 5.5) upset No. 6 Duke 79-78 in OT. In a battle of Top 25 teams, No. 18 Texas Tech (-9) covered in 72-60 win vs. No. 15 Iowa State, but it was not an upset. Also in the Big 12, Kansas State (+ 10.5) upset No. 23 Texas 66-65.
NBA: Warriors beat Pistons 102-86, barely covering as 15.5-point home favorites after leading 66-38 at halftime. Earlier, in the only other game a day after MLK Day, the Timberwolves beat the Knicks 112-110 but did NOT cover as 4-point road faves. Over/Unders split 1-1.
NHL: Underdogs went 5-3 Tuesday with upsets by the Canadiens (+ 290 at Stars), Sabres (+ 190 at Senators), Flames (+ 130 vs. Panthers), Hurricanes (+ 120 at Bruins) and Canucks (+ 110 at Predators). Overs went 5-3.
Avalanche-Ducks First-Period Over 1.5 -150: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Let’s fire again with another 1P Over as the Avalanche are the league’s top 1P Over team at 26-10 (72.2 percent). The Ducks are more of an Under team, but this reminds me of the other day when the Golden Knights (the No. 5 Over team) played the Penguins (the No. 4 Under team) and VGK jumped out to a 3-0 lead to cash the 1P Over. We’ll ride the hotter team as the Avs average 1.25 goals per First Period while allowing 1.00 to help the Ducks’ chances of contributing to this 1P Over.
Good luck today (and every day!).
