Tuley's Takes Today: Sunday betting recaps, updated stats, Monday MLB 1st 5 inning plays 8/22

Sunday was a relatively uneventful day around the Tuley’s Takes home office and doing some chores around the house (fixing a doggie gate, cleaning out some cabinets and junk drawers, mostly stuff I’ll never be able to get to when the football regular season kicks off).

We were also watching a bunch of baseball and preseason football, but we didn’t have the success we’re been experiencing lately as we lost our Best Bet on the Cardinals + 6 vs. the Ravens. As I mentioned, the line was as high as Ravens -7. I wish we could say we grabbed it, but we didn’t and I’m sure the majority of our readers didn’t either. It was mostly the wrong side as the Ravens dominated early and led 10-3 at halftime and 24-3 after three quarters, though the Cardinals did rally to make the final 24-17 and give us a little thrill.

We also lost our two MLB 1st 5 plays as the Blue Jays trailed the Yankees 2-1 after 5 innings and the Marlins trailed the Dodgers 6-2 after 5 innings.

Let’s recap the rest of Sunday’s (full-game) betting results and then look for more 1st 5 plays on Monday (actually, we already gave these out on VSiN’s “The Lookahead” show on Sunday night at 10:15 p.m. ET/7:15 p.m. PT, or 15 minutes into the archived version.

Sunday’s recaps

NFL preseason: Ravens (-5.5) beat Cardinals 24-17 for their record 22nd straight NFL preseason win and 20-2 ATS or 19-2-1 ATS. Faves are 3-0 SU and 1-1-1 ATS Sunday with push in Eagles (-1) 21-20 win at Browns. Bengals (+ 4.5) covered in 25-22 loss at Giants. Road teams went 2-1 SU and 2-0-1 ATS. Overs 3-0.

More NFL: Faves 10-4 SU with 1 pick-'em so far in Preseason Week 2 and 7-5-2 ATS. Road teams are 9-6 SU and 8-5-2 ATS while Unders dip to 8-7. Overall, faves 18-12 SU with 2 PKs and tied 14-14-2 ATS. Road teams lead 17-14 SU and 15-14-2 ATS. Overs are 21-11 after 8-0 start and slipping to 18-11 before Sunday.

MLB: Faves/dogs split 7-7 Sunday with biggest upsets by the A's (+ 190 in 5-3 win vs. Mariners), Tigers (+ 165 in 4-0 win vs. Angels) and Rangers (+ 162 in 7-0 win at Twins). Road teams led 7-6 with Red Sox-Orioles playing on neutral field in Williamsport, Pa. Overs went 7-6-1 with the push in Brewers’ 5-2 win at Cubs with a betting total of 7 runs.

More MLB: Faves lead 1,077-715 SU (60.1 percent) on the season with 27 pick-'ems (faves usually win around 59 percent; still ahead of pace; gap had been narrowing but now well over 60 percent). Home teams lead 961-856 (52.9 percent, usually closer to 54 percent but on the rise). Unders lead 896-829-97 (51.8 percent).

Monday’s Takes

Yankees 1st 5 + 135 vs. Mets: We know Max Scherzer is starting for the Mets and he’s tough, and the Yankees’ Domingo German is usually no match for him, but these two did face on July 27 when the Mets completed a sweep of a two-game subway series at home and German only gave up 2 runs as the Mets led 2-0 after 5 innings. So, the Yankees will have to do better here at home and give more run support than they’ve given German in his last 3 starts as he has a 2.87 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Also taking Yankees + 150 for the game.

A’s 1st 5 + 120 vs. Marlins: Adam Oller starts for the A’s; he hasn't been very good all season with a 6.63 ERA, but he’s at 4.02 ERA his last 3 starts and won a 1st 5 bet for us last Wednesday against the Rangers. I’m also taking the A’s + 125 for the game and we like our chances as the Marlins have only scored more than 3 runs once in their last 21 games.

Good luck today (and every day!).
