Saturday was another long day in and out of the Tuley’s Takes home office. After posting our supplemental “Team Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” column in the morning, I drove my two youngest kids to Cedar City, Utah, for the musical, “Falsettos.” (If you know anything about Utah or “Falsettos,” I don’t have to tell you what a surprising mismatch that was.)
Anyway, the day ended on a high note as we won our Best Bet again with the Timberwolves (+ 3) beating the Grizzlies outright as we got back to 66.7 percent (2 of every 3) at 46-23-1 ATS with our top play each day the past 70 days (the past 10 weeks) starting with Super Sunday.
We don’t know what happened as both USFL games flew Over their betting totals, but at least we split our two MLB underdog plays with a tidy profit as the Brewers cashed at + 130 at the Phillies. We also split our NHL 1P Overs, but that didn’t fare as well as that results in a loss as we parlayed them.
Let’s recap the rest of Saturday’s betting action and try to keep the good times rolling with our top play and get better with our secondary plays.
Underdogs went a perfect 4-0 ATS on Saturday with upsets by the Raptors (+ 2.5 in 110-102 win vs. 76ers, avoiding a sweep), Celtics (+4 in 109-103 win at Nets, taking a 3-0 lead) and Timberwolves (+2.5 in 119-118 win vs. Grizzlies, evening series at 2-2). The Mavericks (+5.5 covered in 100-99 loss at Jazz as that series is also now tied 2-2.
Faves went 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS Saturday, dropping to 18-9 SU and 15-12 ATS (55.6 percent) overall in the 1st round. Home teams went 3-1 SU, improving to 16-11 SU while road teams split 2-2 ATS and still lead 14-13 ATS. Zig-zag teams (aka “loser of the last”) split 2-2 ATS and are now 9-10 ATS overall. Unders went 3-1, improving to 16-11 (59.3 percent).
Stars (-7) beat the Maulers 30-23, pushing on the closing line. The game went way Over the betting total of 35, which was the lowest total of the early season. In Saturday’s nightcap, the Stallions (-3) beat the Gamblers 33-28 to become the first 2-0 team, and they’re also 2-0 ATS. The game also went Over the betting total of 41 points. Faves are now 6-1 SU and 5-1-1 ATS heading into Sunday’s Week 2 finale. Unders went 0-2 and dipped to 4-3 overall.
Faves/dogs split 8-8 on Saturday (including the Tigers and Rockies splitting a doubleheader). The biggest upsets of the day were by the Orioles (%plussign#0 in 5-4 win at Angels) and Diamondbacks (%plussign4 in 5-2 win vs. Mets). Home/road teams also split 8-8. Unders went 8-7-1 with the push in the Brewers' 5-3 win at the Phillies with a betting total of 8 runs.
Faves/dogs split 8-8 Saturday, but faves still lead 134-86 SU (60.9 percent) on the young season with 2 pick-'ems. Home teams also 8-8 and still lead 116-106 over road teams, which led 65-63 just 7 days ago. Unders went 8-7-1 and are still better than 60 percent at 128-82-12 (61 percent).
Faves went 11-1 SU Saturday as they continue to dominate in late regular season action (faves were also 7-5 on the -1.5 puck line). The lone upset was by the Sabres (+ 110 in 5-3 home win vs. Islanders). Overs went 6-5-1 with the push in the Kings' 4-2 win vs. the Ducks with a betting total of 6 goals.
Bulls + 4.5 vs. Bucks:
There’s a mixed bag of teams in the zig-zag role on Sunday. We don’t like backing teams facing a sweep (though the Raptors came through in that role on Saturday), so we’ll pass on the Nuggets vs. the Warriors. We also don’t like the Heat -2 at the Hawks as chalk or the Pelicans + 2.5 vs. the Suns as that line is too short in our opinion. After skipping Game 3 (when the Bucks rolled 111-81) in this series after cashing with the Bulls in Game 2, we’ll jump back in on the zig-zag in Sunday’s Game 4. In addition to zig-zag teams (at least those in the underdog role), we like teams bouncing back from blowout losses.
Breakers-Bandits Under 40.5:
After Overs went 2-0 on Saturday in the USFL, we’ll count on a rebound from the Under in this battle of 1-0 teams.
We’ve shown small profits the past two days with our baseball plays. My (hopefully) live dogs on Sunday are Padres + 130 vs. the Dodgers, Blue Jays + 115 at the Astros, Rockies + 115 at the Tigers and Brewers + 150 at the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball.
NHL 1P Overs:
In addition to parlaying some NHL chalk, I’ll also do a small parlay on Oilers-Blue Jackets, Red Wings-Devils, Lightning-Panthers and Maple Leafs-Capitals 1P Overs in case they all come in.
Good luck today (and every day!).
