Saturday was a fun day outside the Tuley’s Takes home office as we took in the two NFL wild-card games at the Circa sportsbook with Circa Sports Million champion Tony “Durbify” Gordon and our longtime friend Ed Sehon.
For a dog-or-pass bettor like myself, it didn’t turn out too bad as I split my best bets on the day. I won with my best bet on the Bengals-Raiders game staying Under 49 points (barely, as the Raiders threatened late) but lost on my second play of the day on the Patriots + 4 (I got + 5 and it closed a consensus 4.5, but wasn’t even close to making a difference). Note: for those following on NHL First-Period Overs, I’m hoping you made out OK with the two pretty obvious plays on Saturday as they went 2-1).
NFL: Bengals beat Raiders 26-19 to kick off wild-card weekend, covering as 6-point home favorites as the game stayed Under the closing betting total of 49 points. In the nightcap, Bills routed the Patriots 47-17 as 4.5-point home faves as the game went Over 43. Faves started the playoffs 2-0 SU and ATS on the day while Over/Unders split 1-1.
NBA: Faves went 6-4 SU on Saturday, but dogs led 5-4-1 ATS as the Cavaliers (-5) pushed in a 107-102 win at the Thunder and the Bulls (+ 7.5) covered in a 114-112 loss at the Celtics. Upsets were by the Raptors (+ 8 at Bucks), Blazers (+ 7.5 at Wizards), Knicks (+ 1 at Hawks) and 76ers (+ 3 at Heat). Over/Unders split 5-5.
NHL: Faves went 12-1 on Saturday with the lone upset by the Senators (+ 170 in 6-4 win at the Oilers). Faves were also 8-5 on the -1.5 puck line. Unders led 9-4.
CBB: Oklahoma State upset No. 1 Baylor 61-54 as 14-point road underdog and %plussignp0 on the money line. Oregon also upset No. 5 USC 79-69 as a 6-point road dog and + 224 on ML on an upset-filled Saturday.
Note: for reasons on why I like these plays, check out the regular “Tuley’s Takes” in PSW or the NFL Best Bets column at VSiN.com as we’re mostly concerned here with timing when to make our bets.
Buccaneers teased from -8.5 to -2.5:
Obviously if you have a book that’s dealing Bucs -8 or now -1.5, and can tease down to -2 or -1.5, that’s even better. My preferred two-team, 6-point teaser of the weekend from earlier in the week is the Bucs -2.5/49ers + 9.
49ers + 3 at Cowboys:
In addition to betting the 49ers in teasers as mentioned above, I’m also waiting to see if this goes to + 3.5 for my straight bets. Many books have gone to Cowboys -115 or -120, so we’re holding out hope here in Vegas. (For those in states with DraftKings, we pointed out that you could have had 49ers + 3.5 -115 on Friday, though they’ve gone back to 3 as of early Saturday.)
Steelers + 12.5 at Chiefs:
This line has stayed pretty solid, but I still think we can wait to see if we can get + 13 or better.
Cardinals + 4 at Rams:
I advised in Saturday’s column to take the 4 ASAP. We hope everyone following us did as it’s pretty much 3.5 now.
