Saturday was a great day in and out of the Tuley’s Takes home office.
It didn’t start so well with horse racing, though it wasn’t too bad as my 2 top plays that I was going to use in my “Team Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” column were scratched (1 in early scratches before I posted and the other 1 after early scratches). Our family celebrated my son, Maddux’s, 13th birthday on Saturday. He doesn’t actually turn 13 for another week and a half, but we couldn’t have his birthday party next Saturday as that’s reserved for my daughter, Petyon’s, high school graduation. Yep, it’s a busy time of year in the Tuley household.
Anyway, we celebrated at Chuck E Cheese (my boy is slowly becoming a man, but he still has a lot of kid in him!). I had a lot of fun at the party, mostly playing updated versions of skee-ball and pop-a-shot.
Earlier in the day, we won our first sports bet of the day on the Generals-Bandits Under 42.5 in the USFL as it was a stone-cold Under the whole game though we had to sweat out at the end that the Bandits wouldn’t tie the game and send it to OT.
During the party, we were able to sweat out our lone MLB play (wish I had played more as dogs went 12-5 on the day!) on the Rockies in Game 2 of their doubleheader at the Nationals, And then we won our Best Bet of the day on the Rangers -110 vs. the Hurricanes as they won to force a Game 7.
All in all, a great day.
Let’s recap the rest of Saturday’s betting results and try to keep the winning ways going on Sunday.
Saturday’s recaps
NHL: Rangers (-120 home faves) beat Hurricanes 5-2 Saturday night to even their 2nd-round series at 3-3 and force a decisive Game 7 (game went Over the betting total of 5.5 goals. Faves/home teams have won all 6 games so far in this series. Faves lead 14-7 this round and lead 47-25 overall. Home teams now 12-9 in round, 44-28 overall. The zig-zag improved to 8-9 this round with Rangers' win and now lead 32-28 overall. Unders still lead 13-8 this round, but Overs lead 39-31-2 (55.7 percent) overall.
MLB: Dogs went 12-5 on Saturday with biggest upsets by the (Pirates + 195 in 4-2 win at Padres), Reds (+ 165 in 3-2 win vs. Giants for 4th win in row), Royals (+ 150 in 7-3 win at Twins), Orioles (+ 145 in 4-2 win in Game 2 of doubleheader at Red Sox) and Rays (+ 140 in 3-1 win vs. Yankees). Road teams led 10-7. Unders went 10-7.
More MLB: Faves lead 409-270 SU (60.2 percent) on the season with 14 games closing pick-’em (faves usually win about 59 percent, so faves are still ahead of that pace). Home teams lead just 353-340 (51 percent, usually closer to 54 percent). Unders improved to 352-305-36 (53.6 percent), way down from 60 percent a little over a month ago.
USFL: Breakers outlasted Panthers 31-27 in 1st OT game of USFL season, but did NOT cover as 5.5-point favorites (went Over betting total of 41.5 points). Earlier, Generals (-3.5) beat Bandits 20-13 (Under 42.5). Faves 2-U on Saturday but just 1-1 ATS; Over/Unders also split 1-1. Faves 18-8 SU on season but only 13-12-1 ATS; Overs lead 16-10.
NBA: No game on Saturday, but faves are 7-4 SU and ATS this round and 53-27 SU and 46-34 ATS (57.5 percent) overall. Home teams are 6-5 SU and ATS, 49-31 SU overall and slightly profitable at 42-38 ATS (52.5 percent). The zig-zag is 6-3 ATS this round, 36-30 ATS (54.5 percent) overall. Overs 7-4 this round while Unders are 47-33 (58.8 percent) overall.
Sunday’s Takes
Blue Jays + 110 at Angels: With MLB dogs doing so well on Saturday, you would think I’d like a lot of them in Sunday’s series finales, but the best one I’ve found is the Blue Jays as they go for a sweep of the Angels with Jose Berrios on the mound (the Angels are also on a four-game skid as they also lost the last game of their previous series against the Rangers).
Stars-Gamblers Over 44.5: We’ve done a great job of betting the Unders early in the season (8-4 through Week 3) and then flipping to the Overs. On Saturday, we like an Under, but for Sunday’s top USFL play I’m on the Over in the Stars-Gamblers game. I have this closer to 47.5 and the Gamblers are the best Over team in the league at 5-1.
NBA: We nailed Game 6 with the Heat over the Celtics (when it seemed the whole world was assuming the Celtics were heading to the NBA Finals), but I’m not as confident in them in Sunday’s Game 7 even though they’re at home. I’ll probably end up betting the Heat, but can’t call it a Best Bet.
Good luck today (and every day!).
