Tuley's Takes Today: Saturday betting recaps, Sunday best bet (3/6)

By Dave Tuley  (VSiN.com senior reporter)

Saturday was full of non-stop betting action here in the Tuley’s Takes home office (as well as sports books, bars and wherever everyone else watches their action play out) from horse racing in the morning to wall-to-wall college basketball, NBA and NHL, plus some golf and UFC thrown in for good measure.

The highlight of our day was our top best bet, Morehead State + 7.5 vs. Murray State in the Ohio Valley Conference title game. We loved Morehead State, a good team from a smaller conference that wasn’t going to get in the NCAA Tournament unless it pulled an upset to get its conference’s automatic bid, and every time it looked like Murray State (which most people projected would still get in the Big Dance with a loss) was going going to pull away, Morehead State kept fighting back and stayed inside the number to improve our best-bet record to 17-3-1 (85 percent) the past 21 days since our hot run started with the Bengals + 4.5 in the Super Bowl.

We lost our second best-bet with BYU vs. San Francisco in the West Coast Conference tourney, but won our top NHL First-Period Over play with the Canadiens-Oilers Over 1.5 -155.

Let’s get to the rest of the major sports betting recaps from Saturday, and then try to continue our winning ways on Sunday. Unfortunately, even though we have the Las Vegas 400 and a decent number of college and pro b-ball games, I don’t like any of them to call them a best bet. So, while I understand I’ll catch some criticism from some for taking a favorite (NHL 1P Over bet of -145) to try to add to our record instead of a -110 bet or a dog, this is about making money and this is my best bet of the day. Besides, as my VSiN colleague Pauly Howard says, “you don’t pay the juice if you win.”

Saturday’s recaps

NBA: Faves went 5-1 SU on Saturday with the  lone upset by the Lakers (+ 5.5 in 124-116 win vs. Warriors), but faves were only 3-2-1 ATS with the Mavericks (-4.5) failing to cover in 114-113 win vs. Kings, and Timberwolves (-14), pushing in 135-121 win vs. Blazers. Overs went 4-2.

CBB: No. 22 Murray State held off Morehead State 71-67 to win the Ohio Valley Conference's automatic #NCAA bid, but did NOT cover as 8-point favorite. North Carolina (+ 11, + 500 money line) upset No. 4 Duke 94-81 in Coach K's last home game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. No. 6 Kansas (-6.5) beat No. 21 Texas 70-63 in OT and ended up covering the spread. No. 13 Tennessee (-6) held off No. 14 Arkansas 78-74 but didn't cover after leading by 24 points in the first half. No. 17 UCLA (-8) beat No. 16 USC 75-68 but also didn't cover.

NHL: Faves/dogs split 5-5 with upsets by the Canadiens (+ 205 at Oilers), Canucks (+ 185 at Maple Leafs), Flames (+ 150 at Avalanche), Islanders (+ 130 vs. Blues) and Coyotes (+ 102 vs. Senators). Overs went 9-1 with only Under in Islanders' 2-1 win with O/U of 5.5 goals.

Sunday’s Take

Blues-Devils First-Period Over -145: As Howard also says, the Devils are the gift that keeps on giving with their 1P Overs and “will there be a goal in the first 10 minutes?” prop. We’ll keep riding them as they’re 36-18 (66.7 percent) on the season with 1P Overs and the Blues aren’t too shabby at 28-24 for a combined 64-42 (60.4 percent), which justifies laying up to -150.

Good luck today (and every day!).
