We’ve never been into drugs much in the Tuley’s Takes home office (we get high on the adrenaline rush of sports betting!), but we feel we experienced what it’s like to “go through withdrawals” on Sunday.
After the wall-to-wall college football action on Saturday that had our head spinning, Sunday was such a downer with mostly just baseball to follow (we didn’t imbibe in any golf or auto racing), at least up until the Florida State-LSU game at 5 p.m. PT.
We filled our day by going down to Circa to sign up as the proxy for faithful VSiN fan/longtime reader Mike Palmeri in Circa Sports Million and doing a couple of fantasy football drafts.
The wait was worth it as I won my Best Bet of the day on Florida State + 3.5 vs. LSU (it was available at + 4 for followers most of the day on Sunday) as the Seminoles never trailed by more than the spread and held on for a 24-23 win in yet another fantastic finish (see the recap of Saturday’s action in yesterday’s column).
Unfortunately, I lost my lone MLB 1st 5 inning play as the Rockies trailed the Reds 1-0 after the 5th inning and added insult to injury by waiting to explode for 4 runs in the top of the 7th on the way to an 8-4 victory.
Let’s recap the rest of Sunday’s (full-game) betting results and then look for more plays on Monday (note: I don’t like Georgia Tech as a dog vs. Clemson in Monday’s lone CFB game). I wrapped up my Sunday with my weekly appearance on “The Greg Peterson Experience” show on VSiN at 12:15 a.m. ET Monday/9:15 p.m. PT Sunday (15 minutes into the archive if you listen that way), so I’ll also add the NFL Week 1 teasers that I gave out on the show. My popular “takes” column on the full NFL schedule is slated to be moved from Point Spread Weekly to these daily Tuley’s Takes Today columns on Wednesday.
Sunday’s recaps
CFB: Florida State held off LSU 24-23 Sunday night in the Superdome in New Orleans on a blocked PAT after LSU scored a TD on the last play of regulation and was trying to send the game to overtime. The ViewFromVegas is the Seminoles did it as 4-point underdogs and + 165 on the money line. The game stayed Under the betting total of 51 points, causing some Over bettors to claim “Bad Beat” as they would have at least received a refund on a push if it went to OT.
MLB: Faves went 11-5 with upsets by the Nationals (+ 255 in 7-1 win at Mets for the 2nd day in row), A's (+ 162 in 5-0 win at Orioles), Twins (+ 121 in 5-1 win at White Sox), Rockies (+ 112 in 8-4, Game 1 win at Reds) and Royals (+ 108 in 3-2 win at Tigers). Road teams went 9-7. Unders 9-7.
More MLB: Faves lead 1,193-780 SU (60.5 percent) on the season with 30 pick-'ems (faves usually win around 59 percent; still ahead of pace; gap had been narrowing but now back well over 60 percent). Home teams lead 1,059-942 (52.9 percent, usually closer to 54 percent but on the rise). Unders lead 987-909-104 (52.1 percent).
Monday’s Takes
Giants 1st 5 + 150 at Dodgers: As mentioned on “The Greg Peterson Experience,” this play is partly a fade of the Dodgers coming off playing on Sunday Night Baseball, but I also like Logan Webb (11-5, 1.18 WHIP) to keep the Giants in this game at least early before we get to the bullpens. On the show, I also gave out the Diamondbacks + 185 at the Padres as another fade of the Padres coming off SNB, though that was when I saw reliever Kyle Nelson listed as the starter. I’m now seeing that it’s going to be top pitching prospect Ryne Nelson making his first start in the Show. I’ll probably still bet it (and hoping to get at least a split from the Giants and D-backs, but just want to inform readers in case they don’t like the pitching change.
NFL Week 1 teasers:
Thursday
Rams + 8.5 (moved from the current line of + 2.5 up to more than a TD with a 6-point teaser) to these other 4 teams in 2-team, 6-point teasers (try to not lay more than -120).
Sunday
Ravens -1/Colts -2 (passing on 49ers -1 at Bears) in Sunday’s early games
Vikings + 8/Cowboys + 7.5
Good luck today (and every day!).
