Tuesday Sharp Action for Jays-Nats, Cardinals-Twins and Dodgers-Astros

July 27, 2020 11:46 PM

The first few days of the 2020 MLB season got off without a hitch, much to the delight of both action-thirsty bettors and fans. But then on Monday news surfaced that the Miami Marlins were experiencing an "outbreak" of coronavirus inside their clubhouse. It was the first major reality check for a league desperate to keep its players safe and to keep the games going.

According to reports, at least 11 players on the Marlins have tested positive for the virus. The team was subsequently held overnight in Philadelphia, where they just completed a three-game series. MLB was forced to cancel Monday's Orioles-Marlins and Yankees-Phillies games as a result. Today's Orioles-Marlins game has also been called off as officials await the latest round of Marlins test results. If all goes well, the goal is for Miami to travel to Baltimore to begin a new series on Wednesday.

Meantime, the beat goes on. We have 14 games to get down on today. Let's discuss a trio of matchups receiving notable sharp action from respected bettors.

6:05 p.m. ET: Toronto Blue Jays (2-2) at Washington Nationals (1-3)

The Jays took last night's series opener 4-1 behind a pair of homers from Teoscar Hernandez. Toronto was a classic example of a smart dog bet with sharp reverse line movement. Despite a slight majority of bets backing Washington, the line moved big in favor of the Jays (+ 130 to + 110). In tonight's Game 2, Toronto sends Tanner Roark (10-10, 4.35 ERA in 2019) to the mound to face Washington's Austin Voth (2-1, 3.30 ERA).

This line opened with the Nats listed as a -125 home favorite and the Jays a + 115 road dog. The public is already fleeing the Washington bandwagon after their rough start. Average Joes just can't stomach laying a minus number with a struggling club like the Nats. Instead, casual bettors find the plus money with the young, sexy Jays much more appealing. But sharps see a perfect buy-low opportunity to back the defending champs as a rare contrarian favorite. Washington has moved from -125 to -135, signaling pro money in their favor.

8:10 p.m. ET: St. Louis Cardinals (2-1) at Minnesota Twins (2-1)

This Interleague showdown features a pair of 2-1 teams coming off a day of rest. On Sunday, the Cardinals lost as -140 favorites to the Pirates while the Twins beat up on the White Sox 14-2 as -150 favorites. In tonight's matchup, Carlos Martinez (3.17 ERA, 24 saves) returns to the rotation for the Cardinals to face Homer Bailey (13-9, 4.57 ERA), who will be making his Twins debut after signing a 1-year deal this offseason.

The Twins opened as a short -113 home favorite and the Cardinals a + 103 road dog. The oddsmakers are basically saying this is a pick'em game with a slight edge to Minnesota. However, pro bettors have gotten down hard on the home team, forcing oddsmakers to adjust the line up to Twins -130.

9:10 p.m. ET: Los Angeles Dodgers (2-2) at Houston Astros (3-1)

Bettors are in for a treat as these two juggernauts with bad blood face off in the game of the night. It will be a rematch of the 2017 World Series which the Astros won in 7 games. But the Dodgers will look for vengeance after the sign-stealing scandal put the legitimacy of Houston's title in question. The Dodgers have disappointed thus far, splitting four games with the lowly Giants, including two losses in a row. Meanwhile, Houston took care of business by winning three of four against the Mariners. Luckily for Los Angeles, young stud Walker Buehler (14-4, 3.26 ERA in 2019) is on the mound tonight against Houston lefty Framber Valdez (4-7, 5.86 ERA).

The Dodgers opened as -145 road favorites and the Astros a + 135 home dog. Even with Los Angeles enjoying a big starting pitcher advantage, data-driven wiseguys feel the line is a bit too high. Respected wagers have gotten down on Houston as a rare plus money dog at home, dropping the Astros down to + 130. Some books are closer to + 125. Houston also has value as a dog with a high total (9). The more expected runs scored, the greater the variance and increased likelihood of upset opportunities.
