Tuesday College Hoops Sharp Report (3-9)

March 9, 2021 10:12 AM

March Madness continues to ramp up today as several of the major conferences kick off their tournaments. We have roughly 15 college basketball games to choose from today, along with a loaded slate of 9 NHL games. For an updated breakdown of Tuesday's betting action, be sure to tune in to the VSiN Market Insights Podcast with Josh Appelbaum. It will be posted at 12:30 p.m. ET. I'll be joining The Lombardi Line at 1:45 p.m. ET to offer a market update. I'll also be co-hosting Betting Across America with Mike Pritchard from 3-5 p.m. ET.

Until then, let's take a look at a few college hoops games today receiving notable sharp action...

2 p.m. ET: Miami Florida vs Pittsburgh

This ACC Tournament first round matchup features 13-seed Miami (8-16) against 12-seed Pittsburgh (10-11). Miami just took down Boston College 80-76, pushing as 4-point home favorites. The win snapped a six-game losing skid for the Hurricanes, who started the season 4-2 but have gone just 4-14 since. Pittsburgh has also struggled mightily down the stretch. After starting off 8-2, the Panthers went just 2-9 the rest of the way. Pittsburgh lost to Clemson 77-62 their last time out, failing to cover as 9-point road dogs. This line opened with Pittsburgh listed as a short 4-point favorite. The public is laying the points and has no problem fading MIami with their awful record. However, respected money has pounced on Miami plus the points, which has dropped the line down from 4 to 3. Kem Pom has Pittsburgh winning this game by six-points, with Miami ranked 141st in the country and Pittsburgh 82nd. We've also seen some under money show up. The total opened at 137 and has ticked down slightly to 136.5. These teams met back on December 16th and Pittsburgh won 70-55.

7 p.m. ET: Wake Forest vs Notre Dame

This ACC Tournament first round showdown pits 14-seed Wake Forest (6-15) against 11-seed Notre Dame (10-14). Wake Forest is mired in a horrendous tailspin, losing seven consecutive games. Meanwhile, Notre Dame is coming off a huge 83-73 win over then 11th-ranked Florida State, winning outright as 7-point home dogs. This line opened with Notre Dame listed as an 8-point favorite. The public sees two sub .500 teams and says nine points is way too much to lay. However, despite a majority of bets grabbing Wake Forest plus the points, this line has remained frozen at 8 and even seems to be trending up to -8.5 based on the juice price (-8 at -115). This signals sharp contrarian value on Notre Dame, with respected money looking to fade the trendy dog and back the Irish to win by nine or more. Ken Pom has Notre Dame winning by exactly nine points. He also has Notre Dame ranked much higher (67th vs 169th). Pros seem to be leaning toward the over as well. The total opened at 141.5 and has been bet up to 143. These teams met back on February 2nd and Notre Dame won 79-58. Notre Dame will lean on the fact that they take care of the ball. The Irish only turn the ball over 15.7% of its possessions, 23rd lowest in the country.

7 p.m. ET: Mount St. Mary's vs Bryant

This is the Northeast Conference Tournament championship game. Mount St. Mary's (11-10) enters as the 4-seed while Bryant (15-5) is the 2-seed. Mount St. Mary's shocked top seeded Wagner 66-60 in the semifinals, winning outright as 4.5-point dogs. Meanwhile, Bryant crushed Sacred Heart 85-55 in the semifinals, easily covering as 7-point favorites. This line opened with Bryant listed as a 4.5-point favorite. While this may not be a popular game with the public, pros have taken a keen interest and promptly gotten down hard on Bryant, pushing the line from -4.5 to -5.5. Ken Pom has Bryant winning by six points. He also has Bryant ranked much higher (167th vs 227th). This is a true home game for Bryant as it will be played in their home gym and not on a neutral court. Bryant is a perfect 10-0 at home this season. Mount St. Mary's is 5-6 on the road. This game also represents a striking difference in style as Mount St. Mary's is one of the slowest teams in the country in terms of pace (62.2) while Bryant is one of the fastest (73.6). The total has ticked down slightly from 133 to 132.5. Both teams have been profitable to the under this season, with Mount St. Mary's 14-7 to the under and Bryant is 10-9.
