Dekkers reportedly bet on 26 Iowa State events

Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers could lose his remaining NCAA eligibility as a result of placing sports bets on Cyclones events, including one of his own football games. Dekkers did not play in the Saturday October 23, 2021 game against Oklahoma State as the backup to Brock Purdy, but that is said to be one of the 26 Iowa State sporting events in question.

NCAA guidelines prohibit wagering on sporting events at an athlete’s school and obviously prohibit betting on one’s own games. Dekkers is said to have made 366 sports bets overall totaling more than $2,799.

The findings about Dekkers were in regards to a larger probe about sports betting. Offensive lineman Dodge Sauser is also accused of betting on football games with 12 wagers in excess of $3,000. Sauser never played in a game, but any bets would still violate the NCAA rules. Former Iowa State player Enyi Uwazurike is also under scrutiny for betting on games he participated in back in 2021.

2023 Iowa State Football

The loss of Dekkers would be pretty significant, as experience is hard to find on the roster. Dekkers was Purdy’s backup for two seasons and then posted a 19/14 TD/INT ratio with 3,044 passing yards in his first season at the helm. Iowa State was only 4-8 last season.

The Cyclones have three scholarship QBs on the roster, but 15 combined pass attempts between them. They also have JUCO transfer Tanner Hughes, who played the last two seasons at Butte College.

Hopes weren’t terribly high for this team anyway with a win total of 5.5 that is now 5 with the Under at -130 per DraftKings Sportsbook. They are +8000 to win the Big 12.
