Selections of the quarterfinalists in the $190,000 Friday Football Showdown at the Golden Nugget

LAS VEGAS – And then there were eight . . .
The quarterfinals of the Golden Nugget’s $190,000 Friday Football Showdown take place this weekend and we have the plays from the eight participants who are still alive for the $60,000 first-place prize.
The Friday Football Showdown drew 95 entries this year at $2,000 apiece with the top 16 records from the 12-week preliminary rounds advancing to a bracket-style tournament the rest of the football season. The entrants with the top four records received double-byes through the first two weeks of head-to-head matchups and return to action this week to face the four survivors.
Tha Good Playa, the alias of Las Vegas poker pro Brandon Wittmeyer, earned the No. 1 seed for his record of 58-26 (69%) in the preliminary rounds and now faces No. 16 seed Ned Landers, who was the last to qualify and had to win the last two weeks to get to this point.
All playoff qualifiers earned $3,000 while the Top 4 each earned an additional $3,000 with Tha Good Playa getting a $2,000 bonus for being the No. 1 seed, so Wittmeyer has already earned $8,000.
No. 5 seed Mucked Nuts, the alias of defending champion Chris Kozak, had to win last week after he just missed the Top 4, and gets a tough draw as he’s facing No. 4 seed Stag Capital, who just happens to the current leader of the $5,000 buy-in, winner-take-all SuperContest Gold event at the Westgate.
The other two matchups feature No. 2 seed Skins Raj 28 against No. 7 Ed From Vegas while No. 3 DMill, the alias of advantage player David Miller who had two entries in the Top 10 of the 2014 SuperContest to earn more than $147,000, faces No. 11 seed TwoNiner, who had a 7-0 week in the first round of the playoffs and is 12-2 the last two weeks.
Actually, all the contestants have done well during the first two playoff rounds as none have finished below .500 and they were a combined 38-17-1 (69.1%) two weeks ago and 34-22 (60.7%) last week, which included an 0-8 mark as all eight players used the Browns as 3.5-point home underdogs vs. the Packers, only to have them lose, 27-21, on an overtime touchdown. Believe me, I’ve covered all the Vegas-based contests/tournaments since 1999 and have never seen a group hitting at such a high rate.
It should be an exciting weekend as we move toward next weekend’s semifinals. Players were allowed to make their seven picks this week from the sides and totals on the NFL Week 15 slate as well as the bowl games on the board through next Wednesday. In case of a tie, the seventh play listed is used as a tiebreaker. If that’s the same result, the tiebreaker works backward toward the first selection until a winner is determined. In the unlikely event there’s still a tie (though it would automatically happen if both go 7-0 or 0-7), the next tiebreaker is the number of points by which the seventh play covers or doesn’t cover, and again works in reverse order until a winner is determined.
The Mucked Nuts-Stag Capital matchup is intriguing as they have four common plays and the top three picks in the exact same position, so the Cardinals plus-4.5 against the Redskins holds added weight for Stag Capital as does the Steelers plus-3 against the Patriots for Mucked Nuts.
