Saturday Sharp Action Report: Bruins-Hurricanes, Lightning-Blue Jackets and Dodgers-Angels

August 15, 2020 04:40 AM

Underdogs feasted in the NBA and NHL on Friday. In the NBA, they went 3-1 ATS and 3-1 straight up with upset wins by the Raptors (+ 2.5, beat Nuggets 117-109), Pacers (+ 1.5, beat Heat 109-92) and 76ers (+ 2.5, beat Rockets 134-96). The only favorite to cover was the Clippers (-3.5, beat Thunder 107-103). However, many bettors actually cashed on the Thunder if they bet them early. Oklahoma City opened + 6, closed + 3.5 and lost by 4. So anyone with a + 4.5 or better ticket won. This speaks to the importance of getting a good number before it falls. Dogs wrap up the bubble with a 44-42-1 ATS. Unders went 3-1 yesterday but overs finished with a winning record of 47-40-1 in the bubble.

In the NHL, dogs went 4-1 with upset wins by the Canadiens (+ 126), Canucks (+ 125), Islanders (+ 108) and Flames (-105). The only favorite to win was the Avalanche (-210).

Today, the NBA play-in tournament takes center stage at 2:30 p.m. ET when the 9th-seed Grizzlies (34-39) meet the 8th-seed Blazers (35-39). If the Blazers win, they will take on the Lakers in round one of the playoffs. If the Grizzlies win, then they will play the Blazers again tomorrow with the winner facing the Lakers. In other words, the Grizzlies need to win both today and tomorrow in order to make the postseason. The Blazers just need to win today. Portland is listed as a 5.5-point favorite with a total of 232.5.

Aside from the Grizzlies-Blazers game, we also have 4 NHL games and 16 MLB games. Let's discuss a trio of matchups receiving notable sharp action from respected bettors.

Noon ET: Boston Bruins vs Carolina Hurricanes

This is the early game on Saturday. The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1. The Bruins cashed as -140 favorites in Game 1, winning 4-3 in double overtime. The Hurricanes bounced back in Game 2, winning 3-2 as + 110 dogs to even the series. This Game 3 lined opened with Boston listed as a short -120 favorite and the Canes a + 110 dog. The public is riding the Bruins to the tune of two-thirds of moneyline bets. However, this line has dipped from Boston -120 to -115. This signals sharp reverse line movement on Carolina (+ 110 to + 105). A huge injury to monitor here is Boston's David Pastrnak. He missed Game 2 with an undisclosed injury and is considered a game-time decision for today's game. The total opened at 5.5 and heavy juice liability remains on the under at -140.

7:30 p.m. ET: Tampa Bay Lightning vs Columbus Blue Jackets

This series is tied at one game apiece. The Lightning won Game 1 in the 5th overtime by a score of 3-2, cashing as -165 favorites. The Jackets showed great bounce back resilience by winning 3-2 in Game 2 as juicy + 145 underdogs. This pivotal Game 3 lined opened with Tampa Bay listed as a hefty -180 favorite and the Jackets a + 160 underdog. Pro money thinks the line is way too high and got down on Columbus, dropping the Jackets down to + 150. One advantage for CBJ is the fact that they're designated as the home team, which means they get last change and coach John Tortorella can play matchups against the top Tampa lines. This total opened at 5. Liability looks to be on the over as it's juiced up to -140.

9:40 p.m. ET: Los Angeles Dodgers (14-7) at Los Angeles Angels (7-13)

The Dodgers took care of business in last night's series opener, winning 7-4. The Dodgers received a combination of both pro and Joe money that pushed them from -155 to -170 favorites. In tonight's Game 2, the Dodgers send young stud Walker Buehler (0-0, 4.40 ERA) to the mound to face Angels lefty Andrew Heaney (1-1, 4.26 ERA). This line opened with the Dodgers listed as -147 road favorites and the Angels a + 137 home dog. The Dodgers are a big name team with a far better record and are riding a three-game winning streak. As a result, they are an auto-bet for the public. However, despite receiving two-thirds of bets the Dodgers have fallen from -147 to -136. This signals some sharp action buying low on the Angels at home getting decent plus money (+ 137 to + 126). The total is 9. The forecast calls for 7-10 MPH winds out to left center.
