The NASCAR series stays on the West Coast this weekend as drivers will compete at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The race cars will revert back to the 550HP engine package in what should result in a competitive event. In the garage area, there is a sense that the race package will fit the track and racing style which should produce quite a show.
This is not to say that the unknowns of the early season have been solved or provided much clarity. However, there is a feeling that perhaps we have started to learn some of the nuances that are incorporated into this new rules package. We know that track position is still of supreme importance, but we are also learning that qualifying results may not be entirely indicative of who is really fast as the weekend progresses. With Auto Club Speedway on deck, the drivers should experience something of a hybrid situation as the track itself is closer to what we saw in Atlanta, and the cars are tuned more like what was raced in Las Vegas.
Wild restarts and pack racing are expected to be on display at Auto Club Speedway. With improved car control, the drivers should be able to side draft and work themselves in and out of tight spaces.
The weekend progression has not made much of a case to alter the selections that were put forth on our VSiN show “Gone Racin” which airs Thursday evenings. Once again, here are the selections.
