Oddsmakers unimpressed with Baker Mayfield trade to Carolina Panthers

Baker Mayfield has finally found a new team, but sportsbooks are unimpressed with the move.

The Cleveland Browns traded Mayfield on Wednesday to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2024 conditional draft pick. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sam Darnold and Mayfield will compete for the starting job.

Oddsmakers didn’t make significant changes, even if Mayfield indeed wins the job. DraftKings Sportsbook kept the Carolina Panthers’ Super Bowl (130-1) and odds to win the NFC (60-1) unchanged, while moving the Panthers’ NFC South odds from 12-1 to 10-1.

Stations Casinos moved Carolina from 100-1 to 85-1 to win the Super Bowl. “I think it’s a good move for the Panthers,” Chuck Esposito, Station Casinos sportsbook director, told VSiN. “I’d make Mayfield a huge favorite to start, but the Panthers are still behind both the Bucs and Saints in the NFC South. The opening game against the Browns has already dropped a point (to Browns -1) and now becomes one of the more interesting Week 1 games.”

Caesars Sportsbook moved Carolina’s Super Bowl odds from 125-1 to 100-1, while several other sportsbooks didn’t make any changes to their odds.

The Panthers win total stayed at 6.5, with the under juiced at -125 at DraftKings.
