Today’s NHL Predictions
Home team’s projected win probability. Subject to change based on starting goaltenders and injury news.
- Islanders – 48.5 percent (+106)
Connor Hellebuyck is expected to play his third game in four days after an amazing 50-save performance versus the Rangers on Monday while Ilya Sorokin is coming off back-to-back 40-plus save performances versus the Penguins. Both teams are starved for goals, but the Jets have a higher offensive ceiling, and they aren’t missing one of their top players. Western conference teams have struggled in the East this season, but the Jets are among the best in the West.
- Dallas – 80.6 percent (-414)
Chicago comes into Dallas on a three-game win streak, and it seems like the team is feeding off Patrick Kane’s energy right now. This is a tough spot for the Blackhawks, though, as they are playing their sixth game in nine days and their opponents have had three days off. Dallas will likely win the game, regardless of whether Jake Oettinger starts in goal or not, but I’m certainly not interested in backing a big favorite that has scored just five goals in their last four games. Dallas has lost seven of their last nine games and while this might be a spot for the Stars to get right, value is going to be tough to come by.
Note: Dallas recalled goaltender Matt Murray from the American Hockey League which likely means one of Jake Oettinger or Scott Wedgewood is sick or injured and won’t be able to dress tonight.
- Arizona – 32.5 percent (+208)
Calgary has lost five of seven games since returning to action following the All-Star break and continue to be one of the most disappointing teams in the NHL. The Flames have dominated possession, owning 62.5 percent of the shots over their last seven games, but their 53.6 percent share of expected goals leaves a lot to be desired. The Flames have been an absolute money pit this season and their 11-13 record with odds of -190 or higher illustrates just how badly the team has underperformed in these situations.
