Ravens brought back Hundley in light of Jackson knee injury
Lamar Jackson seems to wind up on the injury report in some fashion every week, but the knee injury that he suffered in Week 13 against the Denver Broncos was enough for the Baltimore Ravens to sign an insurance policy. Baltimore brought back QB Brett Hundley, who was in training camp with the team back in the summer, to add some depth with the expectation that Jackson could miss at least one week.
With Jackson presumed out this week and Tyler Huntley as the starting quarterback, we’ve seen this line swing from Ravens -4.5 on the lookahead to Steelers -2 as betting action gets underway in earnest for Week 14. Huntley was 27-of-32 for 187 yards and 10 carries for 41 yards in the 10-9 win over the Broncos.
It was Huntley who led a 16-play, 91-yard touchdown drive for the game-winning score on a two-yard plunge into the end zone to propel the Ravens to 8-4. They share the lead in the AFC North with the Cincinnati Bengals, but have the top spot from a head-to-head win back in Week 9.
Lamar Jackson stats
The 2019 NFL MVP had played 100% of the team’s offensive snaps prior to getting hurt just 10 plays into last Sunday’s game. Jackson has completed 62.3% of his passes with a 17/7 TD/INT ratio this season. He’s also rushed for 764 on 112 carries for a 6.8 yards per carry average, which is the highest for him since his MVP-winning season.
Jackson was hurt in Week 14 last year and missed the final four regular season games, which were all losses for the Ravens en route to an 8-9 season that forced them to miss the playoffs.
Tyler Huntley stats
In extended action last season because of Jackson’s injuries, Huntley completed 64.9% of his passes with a 3/4 TD/INT ratio in four starts and seven games played. His performance on Sunday represented his first meaningful snaps of the season.
Huntley did run 47 times for 294 yards last season when taking over as the starter late in the season. He does a lot of the same things Jackson does, only to a lesser degree. He’s a good fit for the offense and he shouldn’t limit the playbook any for as long as he’s out there.
Baltimore Ravens odds (DraftKings)
- Super Bowl LVII: +2000
- AFC winner: +1000
- AFC North winner: -140
Baltimore Ravens schedule
Week 14: at Pittsburgh Steelers
Week 15: at Cleveland Browns
Week 16: Atlanta Falcons
Week 17: Pittsburgh Steelers
Week 18: at Cincinnati Bengals
We’ll see if that Week 18 game is for the AFC North crown, but the Ravens do play four division games the rest of the way. An extended absence for Jackson could have huge implications within the division and also in the wild card race, but we’ll have to see the prognosis. It is not expected to be serious, but the signing of Hundley suggests he will at least miss this week’s game.
