LAS VEGAS -- Nevada sports books won $27.1 million from bettors in November, an increase of 176.35% from November 2017, according to figures released Thursday by the state’s Gaming Control Board.
Football (college and pro combined) made up the majority of that with a win of $18.4 million, an increase of 69.31% from last November. The books won $10.7 million on basketball (again, college and pro combined) in November, an increase of 60.85% from last year.
The big hit to the books’ bottom line came from losing $5.9 million on baseball due to paying out Red Sox futures after they won the World Series on Oct. 28. Bettors who had future-book winnings credited on their mobile betting devices or cashed tickets (including any other baseball wagers) by Oct. 31 were counted in the October figures, but those who cashed tickets after Nov. 1 are including in this month’s report. Last year, the books lost a record $11.4 million when the Astros’ World Series fell on Nov. 1, so all losses were reported in the latter month. Those accounting anomalies, with $5.5 million less of a loss this November, helped boost the state's overall win, especially compared to November 2017.
Back to football, the November’s $18.4 million win was not only up 69.31% from last year, but it was also up 62.8% from last month when the books had a rough month, winning “only” $11.3 million in October. The books are still doing just fine overall in football as they’re up $63.97 million since the start of September thanks to the record $44.23 million win in the opening month.
