Nevada casinos win $5.8 million on sports betting/poker in May, though exact figures redacted

Nevada casinos won $5.8 million from gamblers in May despite the brick-and-mortar properties still being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to figures release by the state’s Gaming Control Board, though the win was down 99.41% from May 2019 when the casinos profited nearly $981.8 million.

The vast majority of the winnings came from mobile sports betting apps and online poker, though the exact figures for each were redacted from the GBC report for the second straight month. The press release for the May report came with the same disclaimer that was included with the figures for April, which also had casinos closed for the full month after Gov. George Sisolak ordered them shuttered on March 18:

"Due to the extremely limited amount of reported gaming revenue for the month of May 2020 and statutory limitations regarding the confidentiality of financial records, several portions of the Monthly Revenue Report have been redacted"

Caesars Palace, MGM Resorts, Circa Sports and William Hill were the only sports betting apps that were operating in April with the only poker app being WSOP.com (a division of Caesars, a publicly traded company), so even though the Westgate and South Point re-opened their sports betting apps, GBC senior research analyst Michael Lawton told VSiN that the figures could not be released so as to “preserve the confidentiality of an individual licensee’s revenue” under NRS 463.120(4)(a).

In layman’s terms, that means that since Caesars’ poker figures could have been determined if both sports and poker revenues were published, the GBC was required to black those out.

The reports should return to normal (or at least the “new normal”) when the June figures come out as most of the state’s casinos reopened on June 4.

Back to May, the $5.8 million won by casinos (and, again, we can’t be sure how much is from sports betting how much is from online poker) was at least a 61% increase over the nearly $3.6 million won in April. For the sake of comparison, New Jersey sportsbook apps reported a $9.9 million win in (8.4% hold on a handle of $118 million) as the Garden State’s revenues almost quadrupled and handle more than doubled the $2.6 million won from $54.6 million in wagers reported in April.
