Tuesday Betting Recaps

Welcome to our daily recap of the sports betting results from the night before.
In case you missed the announcement last week, we’ve started splitting our “Tuley’s Takes” columns into two separate pieces: this FREE article where I recap last night’s betting action and update league-wide ATS stats in the various team sports, and then another one where I give me Best Bets on the day’s wagering menu.
Links to both articles should be found on the VSiN.com home page, though I advise my regular readers to also bookmark my dedicated page at https://vsin.com/news/dave-tuley-columns/.
As for Tuesday’s betting action, the NBA playoff trend of SU winners covering the spread (meaning either favorites covering or dogs winning outright with the spread not coming into play) hit a major speed bump. The Hawks did pull an outright upset of the Celtics to avoid elimination, but then the Nuggets and Suns failed to cover in their wins as the points came into play and SU winners dropped to 30-4-1 ATS..
With higher seeds back home in the NHL playoffs, hosts went 2-1 in Game 5s after road teams (higher seeds) were 11-1 the prior three days in Game 4.
Meanwhile, underdogs actually came out ahead at 8-7 on the day.
Let’s get to the more specific sport-by-sport breakdowns from Tuesday.

NBA: Faves went 2-1 SU but dogs swept 3-0 ATS. The upset was by the Hawks (+13.5, +650 money line in 119-117 win at Celtics) while the Timberwolves (+10 in 112-109 loss at Nuggets) and Clippers (+12.5 in 136-130 loss at Suns) covered in losses. Home teams went 2-1 SU but road teams swept 3-0 ATS. Overs also swept 3-0.

More NBA playoffs: Faves lead 24-11 SU and 20-15 ATS (57.1%). Home teams lead 24-11 SU but dip to 22-12-1 ATS (64.7%). Overs took lead at 18-17 (Unders still lead 21-20 if including play-in tournament). The “zig-zag theory” (aka "loser of the last") went 2-1 ATS, improving to 14-12-1 ATS, with the Hawks and Clippers covering after losing the prior game while the Nuggets came up short.

NHL: Favorites went 2-1 with the Stars (-140 in 4-0 win vs. Wild) and Oilers (-230 in 6-3 win vs. Kings) winning as chalk. The upset was by the Islanders (+140 in 3-2 win at Hurricanes). Home teams went 2-1 with higher seeds back at home after road teams were 11-1 the prior 3 days. Unders led 2-1.

More NHL: Faves/dogs are back to .500 at 17-17 in 1st round with 1 pick-’em. Road teams still lead 21-14 overall. Overs dipped to 21-14. The "zig-zag theory" (aka "loser of the last") went 1-2 to drop to 16-11 (after 10-2 start) with win by the Islanders after losing the previous game while the Wild and Kings lost.

MLB: Underdogs led 8-7 with the biggest upsets by the Rockies (+185 at Guardians), Nationals (+180 at Mets) and Astros (+160 at Rays). Road teams went 8-7. Unders led 9-5-1 with the push in STL-SF (9). On the season, faves still lead 215-136 with 6 PKs. Road teams took 179-178 lead. Overs dipped to 175-165-17 (51.5%).
