Nationals boast best rotation rating

When the MLB season arrives, bettors who haven’t been paying much attention to the offseason news might be surprised to see how much things have changed. Many teams have essentially rebuilt their rotations and their bullpens. Perhaps the latter is in response to the major rule change requiring pitchers to face at least three batters or complete a half-inning. In any case, those hoping to be ready to wager when the season starts will want to catch up … and fast.

To help in getting ready, and perhaps in evaluating season win totals, I’ve put together a ranking of the teams’ combined starting pitcher power ratings. These ratings are taken from my individual pitcher ratings and their typical start length. I’ve used the depth charts offered by Rotowire.com, my favorite source for player and fantasy information. At this point, Rotowire has offered a six-deep rotation for all teams except the Dodgers. Naturally, the pitchers at the top of all teams’ charts would figure to get the most starts and innings. But for the purposes of this exercise, I have treated all six pitchers equally in an effort to focus on depth as the most important factor.

The power ratings I have used are the same ones that go into creating the daily strength ratings and projections you’ll find on VSiN.com all season long. They are devised from statistics, performance and perception in the betting markets. Specifically, I tend to put more emphasis on pitchers whose talent and arsenal command more respect from those setting the odds. In other words, a pitcher with a big arm who can overpower hitters with multiple dominant pitches is rated higher in my system than those who rely on craft and perhaps good fortune. This line of thinking best reflects the markets that bettors face daily.

You’ll want to evaluate some specific highlights if you hope to find value in the season win totals market. Let’s take a look at those:

— The defending champion Nationals are the team with the best pitching depth in MLB, according to my numbers. The top of their rotation is elite with Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, but beyond that they are solid as well. Strikeouts per nine innings is one of my more valued statistics for analyzing pitchers, and Washington’s top three boast numbers above 10.5 from last year. Austin Voth as the No. 6 spot starter boasts great potential.

— The Indians are No. 2 and boast a top three comparable to any team, and their Nos. 4-6 all sported WHIP numbers less than 1.3 last season.

— The biggest offseason starting pitcher to move, of course, was Gerrit Cole going from the Astros to the Yankees. To say Cole’s 2019 was dominant would be an understatement, and he immediately moves to the top of the Yankees’ rotation above James Paxton. New York lost Luis Severino to Tommy John surgery, and he’ll miss the entire campaign. The Yankees’ bottom-of-the-rotation stats weren’t great last year, but Jordan Montgomery Jonathan Loaisiga have great potential to be top-line starters eventually.

— Tampa Bay’s rotation might wind up being the best in baseball by the time October rolls around, as the top four had double-digit strikeouts per nine numbers last season. The strength of the Rays’ rotation is ironic, considering Tampa Bay was the organization that committed itself most to the opener strategy of using bullpen pitchers to start games.

— The loss of Cole dropped the Astros from No. 1 on the list at the conclusion of 2019 to No. 5 to open 2020. Remember the name Josh James, though, as he is expected to be in the rotation this year after a quad injury prevented him from doing so last year. He throws a high-90s fastball with an effective change and two breaking pitches. His relief stats last season were exemplary.

— The Dodgers added David Price to the rotation, and he slips in behind Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. They have lost Kenta Maeda, Rich Hill and Hyun-Jin Ryu, all of whom were effective in their own right.

— The Twins added Maeda and Hill and could emerge as one of the surprise rotations in the American League.

— Arizona added Madison Bumgarner to the top of the rotation and could have the makings of one of the best staffs in the league should he return to ace form. Luke Weaver and Zac Gallen were highly effective in partial 2019 seasons.

— The same could be said for the Rangers, who pried Corey Kluber from the Indians to join Mike Minor and Lance Lynn in their rotation. If Kyle Gibson and Jordan Lyles find their best stuff, Texas will have a very good shot in the AL West.

— Toronto has completely rebuilt its rotation with the addition of Ryu, Tanner Roark and Chase Anderson. Even so, the Blue Jays check in at No. 14 on my list, lacking a top-line pitcher.

— The White Sox’s rotation has tremendous potential with the addition of Dallas Keuchel and the return of Michael Kopech, especially if top-liner Lucas Giolito maintains his status. Keuchel is a former Cy Young Award winner, and Kopech was an elite prospect before Tommy John surgery cost him the 2019 season.

— No. 18 Atlanta, No. 20 Philadelphia and No. 24 Boston are among the expected contenders ranking in the bottom half of the league’s rotations, according to my numbers. The Red Sox’s staff was ravaged in the offseason, with Price leaving for the Dodgers and Chris Sale needing Tommy John surgery.

— The Angels rank No. 19 on my list to open 2020, but I could easily see them climbing much higher, as theirs is a rotation built on potential. The return of Shohei Ohtani could be the key, but the addition of Dylan Bundy and Julio Teheran should provide stability. Andrew Heaney, Griffin Canning and Matt Andriese are young arms who could emerge as viable top-tier options.

— The bottom four ranked teams are in the American League, with No. 27 Baltimore, No. 28  Kansas City, No. 29 Seattle and No. 30 Detroit rounding out the list.
