RARE DAY AWAY FROM THE SPA: All things considered, Mr. Ed would have much rather been at Saratoga Race Course on Wednesday. However, sometimes a family guy/horseplayer has to do what he has to do — travel on the mid-day train to Georgia … Anyone spot the Pips? … Among my clan, a day like Wednesday is known as a MFO, or mandatory family obligation. So, I was aiding my traveling 80-year-old cousin James. But Mr. Ed enjoys picking winners at the Spa, even as he rides the rails … While he lost two juicy-payoff wagers by a nostril, Mr. Ed hung in there and cashed his PICK 3 ticket for $148.75 … Earlier, he scored with his EXACTA EXTRA bet for $67 … His deficit for the meet is down to $389, with five days to go … Jockeys Junior Alvarado & Irad Ortiz Jr. (see below) each had a pair of victories … The average $2 Win ticket returned $9.79, while the $1 Pick 6 paid a generous $63,602.

IRAD INDEX: Premiere rider Irad Ortiz Jr. finally broke through his recent fog when, as a substitute jockey, he booted home #3 Raining Candy (22-1 morning line) in the finale. Combined with his earlier Race No. 8 score, he ended the day +$32.50. He began the day at -57.50. He is now down $25 for the past 11 days. He is listed to ride in all 10 races on Thursday.

TODAY AT THE SPA: The $120,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on the turf highlights Thursday’s 10-race card. Listed as Race No. 9 with a 5:39 p.m. ET/2:39 p.m. PT post, #3 Expand the Map (8-5 morning line) for Chad Brown & Irad Ortiz Jr. is the expected favorite. Here are Mr. Ed’s selections:

$1 PICK 3 (Races Nos. 3-5, 2:15 p.m. ET/11:15 a.m. PT)

Race 3: 2,4,7

Race 4: 2,4,5

BEST BET (Race No. 7, 4:29 p.m. ET/1:29 p.m. PT)

Top trainer Chad Brown teams up with underachieving rider Irad Ortiz Jr. on #5 Motivated Seller (4-1 morning line). Filly showed great promise for 3-year-old, caught in lone start this year. She’s selling move to turf sprint — and Mr. Ed is motivated by price. Wager: $20 to Win on 5. ($20)

PRICE PLAY (Race No. 8, 5:05 p.m. ET/2:05 p.m. PT)

Gelding #6 Glory Road (10-1 morning line) makes second start off claim for Tom Amoss barn, stretching out to 1 1/8 miles. Rider change to Irad Ortiz Jr., class drop and fast track put him on road to Winner’s Circle glory. Wager: $10 to Win & Place. ($20)

EXACTA EXTRA (Race No. 9, 5:39 p.m. ET/2:39 p.m. PT)

Mr. Ed trusts trainers Chad Brown, Christophe Clement and Brad Cox to team up in exacta box. Ride #3 Expand the Map (8-5 morning line); #5 Silvery Rill (5-2) & #8 Let’s Be Clear (15-1) to the bank. Wager: $5 Exacta Box of 3,5 & 8. ($30)
