Editor's note: last summer, Ed Sehon (aka Mr. Ed) called this column "Saratoga on (about) $100 a Day." This year, he's just doing the weekend cards (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays) but still approaching each day with around $100 in plays as if he was just trying to beat the races on a given day. Here are his plays for Friday as we head into the 7th weekend of the meet:
NOTE: After arriving in Saratoga Springs early Wednesday morning — and spending the last two days exchanging tall tales with aging horseplayers, backstretch folks and low-profile media personalities — it’s time to resume my thus-far dismal quest for winning 24-day (Fridays-Sundays only) Saratoga meet. Stay tuned followers — I have a feeling Mr. Ed’s final six days will be exciting. Finally, keep an eye on the weather today at Saratoga — heavy showers are in the forecast.
Races 1-2 (1:05 p.m. ET/10:05 a.m. PT)
EARLY $5 DAILY DOUBLE
Race 1: 2,3
Race 2: 1,3
Race 6 (3:55 p.m. ET/12:55 p.m. PT)
Mr. Ed likes #6 Trinity Titoli (12-1 morning line) with under-appreciated Manny Franco riding for perennial sharp Upstate NY trainer Jeremiah Englehart. Movin’ on up off the claim, speedy work and surface switch (dirt to turf) put this guy in the Winner’s Circle. Wager: $10 to Win and $2 Exacta Boxes of 6/2,7,9.
Race 7 (4:29 p.m. ET/1:29 p.m. PT)
I like #4 Donegal Surges (4-1 morning line). Todd Pletcher rehires Jose Ortiz to repeat Aug. 11 debut maiden victory. Look for son of Candy Ride to stalk, pounce in the lane and prevail in NY stakes. Wager: $20 to Win.
Race 8 (5:03 p.m. ET/2:03 p.m. PT).
Mr. Ed likes a trio to kick off winning Pick 4 ticket: #5 Runaway Rumor (5-1 morning line), ships up from Parx — gets red hot Flavien Prat in saddle; #7 Marvelous Maude (3-1) for Chad Brown-Irad Ortiz team and #9 Classic Colors (8-1) for brother Jose and Christophe Clement. Wager: $2 Exacta and $1 Trifecta Boxes.
Race Nos. 8-11 (5:03 p.m. ET/2:03 p.m. PT)
$.50 Pick 4
Race 8: 5,7,9
Race 9: 3,7,11
Race 10: 3,5,7
Race 11: 2,9,11
Race 10 (6:13 p.m. ET/3:13 p.m. PT)
I’m betting on #7 Cross Border (9-2 morning line), the aging, yet still classy millionaire to capture the West Point Stakes. In effort to add gate speed, Michael Maker hires aggressive Kendrick Carrmouche for faster break as he strategically turns roan back to 1 1/16th on Mellon Turf Course. Wager: $10 to Win and $2 Exacta and $1 Trifecta Boxes with 3,5,7.
TODAY’S TOTAL WAGERS: $148.50
