Editor’s note: Just like he did during the 40-day Saratoga meet last summer, Ed Sehon (aka Mr. Ed) is providing VSiN readers with daily picks during the 15-day Keeneland meet that runs through Friday, April 29. Sehon’s selections are meant to give an overview of how to attack each day’s card through the use of Best Bets on individual horses as well as multi-race wagers (which are meant to give a more comprehensive look at the card, so feel free to pick-and-choose from the selections in those races and mix with your own handicapping). He generally tries to do it on a bankroll of (about) $100 a day, though will sometimes go higher on bigger days like he did on Blue Grass Stakes Day and this Saturday. On Friday, Mr. Ed had a Winner with Mouffy ($3.40) and 2 horses run second with Only Kidding ($4.60 to Place) and Making It ($11.40 to Place), but had an overall loss of $47. Here’s his plays for Saturday:

Races Nos. 1-2 (1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT)

$5 SPECIAL DAILY DOUBLE (cost $20)

Race No. 1: #1 American Mandate (8-1 morning line) and #6 Copper Town (2-1)

Race No. 2: #8 Lawmaker (5-2) and #10 Uptown Hustler (7-2)

Race No. 3 (2:04 p.m. ET/11:04 a.m. PT)

My pick is #8 Dark Timber (4-1 morning line). “My play is that changes will do this guy good. Red hot (31 percent) Gulfstream meet trainer Jose D’Angelo adds blinkers and Lasix, upgrades rider to Luis Saez — all after taking his masculinity away. If ever the timber’s going to catch fire, it’s today. Wager $5 to Win and Place.”

Race No. 5 (3:08 p.m. ET/12:08 p.m. PT)

Mr. Ed likes #3 Seasons (2-1 morning line) for respected conditioner Josie Carroll. “Daughter of Tapit has an excellent record (6-1-1-2) facing stiff stakes competition at Woodbine and East Coast ovals. Recent best of 63 drills and addition of Tyler Gaffalione point to maximum effort vs. weak field in allowance mile turf test. Wagers: $10 to Win and $4 Daily Doubles of 3/1,5 (cost $18 total).”

Race No. 6 (3:40 p.m. ET/12:40 p.m. PT)

My choice is #1 Casa de Goat (5-2 morning line). “Maiden daughter of Twirling Candy debuts for powerful Brad Cox-Flavien Prat combo. Series of blistering works and inside post help get goat home ahead of others. Wager: $10 to Win.”

Race No. 7 (4:12 p.m. ET/1:12 p.m. PT)

Mr. Ed’s VALUE PLAY OF DAY is #9 Saranya (6-1 morning line). “When in doubt, trust your gut. No reason to abandon the winning duo of Brad Cox and Flavien Prat. Expensive ($330,000) daughter of The Factor is consistent money-maker, finishing on board in 7 of 10 starts. Look for stalking trip with winning stretch move. Wager: $5 to Win and Place.”

Races Nos. 7-10 (4:12 p.m. ET/1:12 p.m. PT)

Mr. Ed likes the following $0.50 Pick 4 (cost $36)

Race 7: 1,9

Race 8: 3,4,5,8

Race 9: 4,5,9

Race 10: 1,3,9

Race No. 10 (5:48 p.m. ET/2:48 p.m. PT)

Mr. Ed’s BEST BET OF DAY is #9 B Sudd (7-2 morning line). “Dallas Stewart is a sneaky good conditioner, who’s bread-and-butter is strength in the stretch. Son of Jimmy Creed is no exception. Race sets up for perfect stalking trip for sharp Flavien Prat, who leads meet in victories. Mr. Ed is banking best rider has a four-win day, concluding with Pick 4 score. Wager: $10 Win and Place.”

A Numbers Game: Reminder that when it comes to more popular teams (i.e. UConn), there’s not a huge rush to grab futures bets preseason. They were 18/1 then to win a national championship, and were 15/1 right before the tournament. View more tips.
