Jeff Siegel's Best Bets: California dreamin'

The Xpressbet analyst offers his plays for Fridays and Saturdays. Jeff cooled off Friday as both plays ran out.

5 – Talia (6-1)

This California-bred maiden-claiming sprint lacks depth among the known element so let’s go with this debuting four-year-old filly from the Phil D’Amato barn. The daughter of the good speed sire Algorithms has done everything asked in the morning while consistently looking competitive in team drills. While her workout times haven’t been fast, she strikes us as the type that will turn it on when the money’s down. The barn’s go-to rider Abel Cedillo takes the call, so at 6-1 on the morning line she offers a chance at a very nice price both in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

1 – Quick (5/2)

English-bred filly has the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch-out pattern, a lovely inside draw and a healthy series of recent drills for the powerful John Sadler/Umberto Rispoli team, so it all adds up to a pretty solid top selection. Based on her European form, she’ll be much better suited by today’s mile trip after closing well but too late in a pair of recent turf sprints that she simply found too sharp. There’s good wagering value at or near her morning line of 5/2 if you can get it.
