Horse Racing Best Bets for Saturday
It’s the weekend between the NFL Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl and most gamblers are focused on college and pro basketball, but Team Tuley continues to look for value at horse racing tracks from coast to coast.
Last Saturday, we loved when Rampart race and sports book manager Duane Colucci, John Lauro and yours truly all landed on Atone in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational at Gulfstream Park and he paid $9.60 to Win (odds of 7-2). Then, Colucci also hit the Late Pick 4 on the Pegasus card that returned $1,774.75 ($.50 ticket cost just $90).
This Saturday, Colucci and Ed Sehon join me as we have plays at Gulfstream and Tampa Bay Downs in Florida and Santa Anita in California.
Good luck today (and every day)!
Gulfstream Park Race No. 5 (1:46 p.m. ET/10:46 a.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes British-born import #2 Gipsy Chief (6-1 morning line). “Hot trainer Brian Lynch has been working this gal steadily in anticipation of her American debut after posting a trio of second-place finishes in France. Aggressive rider Jose Ortiz climbs aboard. Hail to the chief. Wager: Win and Place.”
Duane Colucci likes #6 Carlin Clan (8-1 morning line). “This Falcone trainee has two solid turf efforts. Junior Alvarado should be able to nurse his speed and control the pace. Solid workouts off the layoff, especially on Jan. 28. Bet 6 to Win and key 6 over 2,4,5 in Exactas and Trifectas and reverse.”
Gulfstream Park Race No. 6 (2:15 p.m. ET/11:15 a.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #4 Aaraj (6-1 morning line). “This 3-year-old colt had a learning debut, ducking out at the start, drifting yet still crushed. Irad Ortiz Jr. takes over coming off a 7-win Friday. This horse has solid speed but must avoid getting cooked in a hot pace. Bet 4 to Win and key 4 over 1,3,6 in Exactas and Trifectas and reverse.”
Gulfstream Park Race Nos. 6-7 (2:15 p.m. ET/11:15 a.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes mid-card DAILY DOUBLE, coupling #1 General Jim (morning line 5-2) and #3 Two of a Kind (4-1) in first leg with #2 Shadow Sphinx (3-1), #4 Samburu (6-1) and #5 Coinage (8-1) in second leg. Wager: 1,3/2,4,5 Daily Double.
Gulfstream Park Race No. 7 (2:45 p.m. ET/11:45 a.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes three in turf sprint: #2 Shadow Sphinx (3-1 morning line), #4 Samburu (6-1), and #5 Coinage (8-1) Wager: Exacta and Trifecta Boxes of 2,4,5.
Gulfstream Park Races Nos. 8-12 (3:16 p.m. ET/12:16 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes the $.50 Pick 5 (cost $48)
Race 8: 1,7
Race 9: 1,4
Race 10: 3,7,8,9
Race 11: 1,7,8
Race 12: 4,8
Gulfstream Park Race No. 9 (3:46 p.m. ET/12:46 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #6 Dude N Colorado (6-1 morning line). “This is a ‘hidden entry’ as Dude N Colorado’s conditioner Todd Pletcher also trains 5-2 favorite Major Dude. Some will assume that Dude N Colorado is the so-called ‘rabbit’ to set up #4Major Dude coming off the pace, but I think Dude N Colorado can steal this on the lead at a better price. Wager: Win and Place – and let’s add a Pletcher 4-6 Exacta box.”
Gulfstream Park Races Nos. 9-12 (3:46 p.m. ET/12:46 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes a $.50 Pick 4 (cost $45)
Race 9: 1,2,4,5,7
Race 10: 7,8,9
Race 11: 2,7,8
Race 12: 1,8
Gulfstream Park Race No. 10 (4:17 p.m. ET/1:17 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #1 Flakes (20-1 morning line) in the Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes. “Shhhh, we hope this maiden winner stays under the radar for this Grade 3 event. She won her debut in a maiden claimer and trainer Juan Alvarado moves her right into graded stakes competition. He’s been solid with maiden winners in their next race, so he’s adept at finding the right places for his young horses. We also like the move to underrated jockey Edgard Zayas. Wager: Win and Place.”
Tampa Bay Downs Race No. 9 (4:55 p.m. ET/1:55 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #13 Golden Alchemist (10-1 morning line) in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes. “This is another hidden entry where I like the longer-priced horse, this time from the Chad Brown barn. This 4-year-old colt won an allowance race last time out at Aqueduct and sneaks in from the also-eligible list, so hopefully we still get double-digit odds from the outside post. He should be able to sit off the pace and have a shot to run ‘em down in the stretch. Wager: Win and Place.”
Gulfstream Park Race No. 11 (5:01 p.m. ET/2:01 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes three: #1 Sweetlou’sgotaces (4-1 morning line), #7 Cairo Consort (2-1) and #8 Heavenly Sunday (5-1). Wager Exacta and Trifecta Boxes of 1,7,8.
Santa Anita Park Races Nos. 7-10 (6:21 p.m. ET/3:21 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes a $.50 Pick 4 (cost $60)
Race 7: 1,2,3,8,9
Race 8: 1,4,6,11
Race 9: 4,5,6
Race 10: 7,8
