LAS VEGAS – The matchups are set for the second round of the playoff portion of the Golden Nugget’s $190,000 Friday Football Showdown as the first-round results were all determined by Sunday afternoon.

The $190,000 Friday Football Showdown drew 95 entries this year at $2,000 apiece with the top 16 records from the 12-week preliminary rounds advancing to a bracket-style tournament the rest of the football season. The top 8 seeds (based on their records in the first dozen weeks making 7 plays a week from the Nugget’s contest lines on college and pro football sides and totals) were awarded byes this past weekend with seeds No. 9 through 16 competing in head-to-head matchups with the survivors moving on to face the No. 5 through 8 seeds next weekend (note: the No. 1 through 4 seeds earn double-byes and await the winners in the quarterfinals the following weekend).

The highlight of the first-round playoff matches was No. 11 seed Twoniner going a perfect 7-0 in beating No. 14 Chihuahua Chihuahua (4-3). The only “upset” (and that’s in quotes as there’s no real advantage to being the higher seed) was No. 16 seed Ned Landers going 6-1 to defeat No. 9 seed Caboose (2-4-1).

The other two matchups were more competitive with No. 10 Super Mia going 4-3 to defeat No. 15 RoughRIder39 (4-3). Even though RoughRider39 equaled Super Mia’s 4-3 mark with the Bengals covering as 5.5-point home dogs on Monday night, Super Mia has already clinched the tiebreaker as plays are submitted in order of preference with the No. 7 play being the best bet and working backward until a winner is determined. In this case, it went to the fifth tiebreaker in which Super Mia chose Coastal Carolina plus-3 against Georgia Southern while RoughRider39’s fifth play was the Carolina Panthers plus-4.5 at the New Orleans Saints.

In an even more contentious matchup, No. 12 seed 30Mock also needed a tiebreaker to eliminate No. 13 Pump Jungle (two-time Friday Football Showdown champion Scott Kellen, who gave his picks on The Las Vegas Sportsline radio show last Friday) as both went 5-2. Both won their top two best bets, but 30Mock’s third-best pick was Akron plus-21.5 in the MAC Championship Game while Pump Jungle lost with the Denver Broncos -1.5 at the Miami Dolphins.

Below are the picks of the first-round participants, who were an impressive 38-17-1 (69.1%) against the contest spreads and totals. The first-round playoff winners each earn $1,000 for their playoff wins in addition to the $3,000 they’ve already received for making the playoffs.

We’ll post the next round’s plays on Friday afternoon here at VSiN.com after the airing of the radio portion of the contest from 2-3 p.m. PT on The Las Vegas Sportsline on ESPN AM-1100 and lvsportsnetwork.com.
