I'll also be joining the Lombardi Line with Michael Lombardi and Patrick Meagher at 12:25 p.m. ET to offer a market update.
Congratulations, Virginia and Michigan!
This has been a momentous week for the push to legalize sports betting in America. Yesterday, we saw Virginia go live with sports betting, making it the 20th state in the country to legally accept sports wagers and the first state in 2021 to do so. Today at noon ET, Michigan launches its long-awaited mobile betting platform. Ten apps will be available to download and wager through, including BetMGM, BetRivers and DraftKings.
In the meantime, let's discuss where smart money is flowing for several Friday night NHL games along with a profitable college hoops trend...
7 p.m. ET: Buffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals
The Sabres (1-3) have one of the worst records in the NHL while the Capitals (2-0-2) are undefeated in regulation. But Washington has been struck by COVID positives and will be missing Alex Ovechkin and a handful of other key players, including their starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov. This line opened with Buffalo listed as a -120 favorite and respected money has pushed the Sabres to -140. Favorites off a loss, like Buffalo, are 13-3 (81%) this season. Favorites with a line move of 20-cents or more in their direction are 6-1 (86%).
7 p.m. ET: New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins
The Rangers (1-2) are at the bottom of the East Division and now head to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins (2-2), who have won two straight. This line opened with the Pens listed as -135 home favorites. Sharps have steamed the Pens, pushing this line up to nearly -150. Home favorites are 23-10 (70%) this season. Pittsburgh is 2-0 at home this season. This will be the first road game for the Rangers.
10 p.m. ET: Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks
The Avalanche (2-2) just got upset by the Kings last night 4-2, losing outright as big -225 road favorites. Now they turn around quickly to face the Ducks (1-2-1). This line opened with Colorado listed as a pricey -210 road favorite. The line has already shot up to -220, signaling respected money laying the wood with the Avs in a bounce back spot. Favorites off a loss are 13-3 (81%) this season. Big favorites -200 or more are 7-2 (78%) this season.
College Hoops- Low Total Overs
Another trend to keep an eye out for on Friday is low total college basketball overs. This system has been a consistent cash cow all season. When the total is 130 or less, the over is 78-46 (63%). If the total is 127 or less, the over improves to 46-14 (77%).
