Reba to sing National Anthem at Super Bowl LVIII

Many people with ties to Las Vegas will be part of the entertainment at Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, February 11. We found out that one of them will be Reba McEntire, who has been granted the honor of being the artist to perform the National Anthem at the Big Game, previously had a residency with Brooks & Dunn at Caesars Palace.

Post Malone will sing “America The Beautiful” and Andra Day will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, but it is McEntire’s anthem that will get all the attention in the betting community, as the Over/Under on the National Anthem is among the most popular bets prior to kickoff.

Sometimes finding information and past performances can be a challenge for the anthem singer. That is not the case here, as one of the queens of country music has done her version of the anthem many times throughout the course of her nearly 50-year career.

Let’s look at some clips of Reba in advance of Super Bowl 58:

Interestingly, Reba was “discovered” in a way after her performance of the National Anthem in 1974 at National Finals Rodeo. That version lasted 71 seconds by my count.

This one is only a partial video from 1978, based on other renditions available on YouTube, this one picks up about 20-25 seconds in and the last note of “brave” ends at about 57 seconds on the clip, so we’ll call this one about 80 seconds.

At the 1984 National Finals Rodeo, Reba’s sweet melody went 78 seconds by my count.

Prior to 1985 World Series Game 1 in Kansas City, Reba clocked in at a very speedy 65 seconds by count.

Before I go on, I have to say, while I am biased as a huge country music fan with enormous respect for Reba, I’m really looking forward to this year’s anthem. She has an incredible voice and is and always has been one of the classiest people in the music industry.

Back to the clips… Maybe the cold slowed her down prior to Game 3 of the 1997 World Series between the Marlins and Indians in Cleveland. This version made it 84 seconds by my count.

At the opening night of the 2010 National Finals Rodeo, Reba stretched it out a little bit and went 85 seconds by my count.

Leading off the Celebrity Hope Softball Game in 2017, Reba went 80 seconds on this rendition by my count.

The CBS Mornings crew talked to Reba about singing the anthem, and she mentioned having done it for 10 years at the rodeo, so she’s done it a lot, done it in front of large crowds, and it also means we have a pretty consistent baseline with a lot of sample size.

However, it is worth noting that her three longest renditions of this sample set have been the three most recent that I found. So, let the analyzing begin.

In faraway places, the opening odds were set at 85.5 seconds for Reba’s rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” on January 18 after the announcement, but that line was taken down and not reposted at time of publication.

Keep in mind that after some controversies and leaks in the past, not all sportsbooks are going to post a National Anthem line. But, if you have a sportsbook that does, now you have the research handy to start your preparations for when the odds do get posted.
