Carlos Correa fails physical with Giants, signs with Mets for $315 million

Carlos Correa signed a 13-year, $350 million deal with the San Francisco Giants last week after the Giants fell short on signing Aaron Judge. Late Tuesday night, Correa’s deal with the Giants fell apart due to a medical issue that arose during his physical. The Mets pounced quickly, signing Corra to a 12-year, $315 million contract within hours after it came out that he failed his physical.

No reason has been given as to why Correa failed the physical, but the Mets don’t seem to be concerned about it. Correa will play third base next to Francisco Lindor, with Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso on the other side of the diamond. This is going to be an astronomical win total line when it gets posted and the Mets are +750 to win the World Series, the same odds as the Los Angeles Dodgers and just below the Houston Astros (+550) and New York Yankees (+700).

The Giants, meanwhile, are back out to +5000 after letting Correa walk away from his mega deal.

Mets have spent over $800 million on free agents this offseason

The Mets have now spent over $800 million in free agency. According to Jeff Passan, their projected Opening Day payroll is $384 million, with $111 million in luxury tax penalties and payments. New York probably isn’t done, but owner Steven Cohen will be shelling out nearly half a billion dollars this season in search of a championship.

If the Mets win 110 games, they’ll be paying about $3.5 million per victory during the regular season. Anything less than a World Series has to be viewed as a complete and utter failure, but they’ll have a lot of years with the current core.

Mets offseason signings

  • Carlos Correa, $315M
  • Brandon Nimmo, $162M
  • Edwin Díaz, $102M
  • Justin Verlander, $86.6M
  • Kodai Senga, $75M
  • Jose Quintana, $26M
  • Omar Narvaez, $15M
  • Adam Ottavino, $14.5M
  • David Robertson, $10M

For those counting at home, that is $806.1 million in players this offseason.

We’ll have plenty of time to preview the Mets and the other teams in the lead-up to the season, but keep an eye on the Hot Stove for any other breaking news stories.
