Brooklyn Nets move to second-best title odds after Harden deal

By Ben Fawkes  (

A blockbuster four-team deal sending James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets has shaken up the NBA futures market. The Nets, already one of the favorites to win the 2020-21 NBA title at sportsbooks have moved to the consensus second-favorite in the market, behind the Los Angeles Lakers.

“We moved Brooklyn to the second favorite behind the Lakers mostly due to the expected wagering support on a team with three top players,” Jeff Sherman, vice president of risk at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook told VSiN. “It looks good on paper, but their defense will need much improvement from the current roster.”

The Nets had 12-1 odds to win the title on Monday at the Westgate, and shifted all the way down to + 350 after news of Wednesday’s trade. The SuperBook had a few significant wagers on the Nets to win the title from earlier in the season, including a $20,000 wager at 14-1 odds that would win $280,000 if Brooklyn claimed the NBA title.

“We them from 6-1 to 3-1 to win the title,” Borgata (NJ) sportsbook director Thomas Gable told VSiN. “They are certainly going to be a tough out in the playoffs if everyone remains healthy, but I feel there are team even in their own division like the 76ers and Celtics that can give them trouble.”

The Rockets’ title odds fell to over 100-0 at multiple sportsbooks.

Brooklyn’s odds to win the title were even as low as + 270 at FanDuel Sportsbook. The two consensus teams with NBA title odds under 10-1 were the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks, both around 6-1 at U.S. sportsbooks.

The Nets currently have the second-most bets to win the title at BetMGM sportsbooks (12%), behind the Lakers (21%).
